Ticking noise oil pan
Ticking noise oil pan
Alright so just pulled in my drive and as i was driving back my road slow i could hear this ticking/tapping noise. When i got home i can not here it at ideal so my buddy got in the truck and give it alittle thottle and i can feel it coming from the oil pan up by the starter. Once he gives alittle more thottle it will stop. Unsure of this problem or cause. Very worried. As you can see i have all the deletes done and only 20,000 miles. anyone have anyideas??? please comment thanks again anyone.
Since its so easy to do, why not pull the oil pan to see? That would be my recommendation. Also, take a photo of what you find and post it, someone is bound to know what the part is. Did you pull the dip stick to ensure its not broken?
Does it stop when he gives it throttle, then continue again after he lets off the throttle?
Or does it stop when he gives it throttle and doesn't come back till you turn off the truck and restart it?

you have to lift the front of the motor to get the pan out. with these new trucks, removal of the valve cover might be needed to get extra clearance. you can't remove the oil pan from the truck without lifting the motor.
I cant really hear it anymore but when the truck is running you cant hear it but once you give it just alittle throttle you can hear the noise and with more throttle it will go away.
Unsure what it was because i cant get it to do it now...

I cant take it in i did all the deletes and have a H&S programmer on it.
I have a new southbend double disc clutch for it just have to find time to install it. I think it might be the fly wheel causing the noise. Unsure because it wont do it when its cold but if you run it all day and listen once you give it just alittle thottle with your head hanging out the door you can hear the noise but once you RPM up some more it goes away. I dont know what it could be.

Unless it sounds like somebody beating on the side of the engine with a hammer then I don't think you have anything to worry about. Most likely it's engine pulses rattling the dmf (flywheel). The DMF is a rattlin/clunkin son of a gun.
Dmurdock, Funny you said something about the dual mass flywheel. I just installed a new southbend double disc over the weekend and when i pulled the transmission, the dual mass flywheel springs had tons of movement. I could take my finger and move them around alot and moving them fast enough made the some type of noise i was hearing. With the new flywheel and clutch i have not heard the noise.
No the noise was NOT a hard hammering noise, just a smooth soft, nothing hard.
I am going to close this case thinking it was the DMF.

I have had two diesel mechanics look at the motor and they both have no clue what this noise is. I would really like to put this to rest and just dont know where to start. Does anyone know a awesome cummins mechanic in eastern pa to take this too?
any help would be great.
thanks
