We own a 2010 Dodge Ram 2500. We are packing up to travel across the state for a week and work our way down the coast with our travel trailer. Of course, we now hear a clicking sound coming from the drivers side area. We had someone lift the front end to see if there is any play in either tire. He said that there is a little bit of play, but nothing too bad. Does this sound like a u joint problem and should we prioritize getting it into a shop before our trip? The individual who looked at it said that it will probably be fine, but seems like maybe something a professional needs to look at as well. The timing is terrible, but that's how it goes. We have no idea when things were replaced on it last as we purchased the truck used.

Could be a couple of different things. A U-joint would be obvious, lift the tire off the ground with a jack and rotate it back and forth. You'll see, feel and hear play between each half of the u-joint if it's bad. They'll go awhile before they need to be replaced though. Could also be wheel bearings.

Thank you! I will have my friend take a look at it again. We are probably driving at least 1000 miles, so the timing isn't great. I don't even know if we can get it to a shop before we leave.
