bdog sounds like your situation was much the same as mine. The dealers up here were quoting me $32,600 for a truck I didn't want or $33,000 for a truck I did want. Saved $3000 by buying the exact model I wanted in Texas, so it was worth the drive. Quad Cab Long Bed SLT, and my only options were the premium cloth seats, limited slip rear, and trailer tow mirrors. Not sure how much more bare bones yours is than mine.
At any rate, good luck with your new truck. Hope your long trip is as fun and uneventful as mine is. Just bring lots of CDs!

Here is an invoice for a 2005,4x4, quad cab, slt, longbed, alloy, and some other goodies.
The MSRP is 42,015
The FWP is 37,491 which they tell me is the dealer invoice.
The FFP is 37,116 which is a supplier discount
The EP is 35,831 the employee discount
The Employee prices + what ever rebate is currently offered which I think is 1,000 on 2005s. I have talked to several dealers and they will go below the EP but I keep reading about guys with out the door prices of 30K.

Blown32,
Christophers Dodge did not have the truck on their lot and they could not beat the price they gave me at Lithia Dodge at Cherry Creek. They had some awesome sales going on there. Some trucks were $10,000 below MSRP.

I feel like I stole mine. Dicks Country Dodge in Hillsboro OR had my SB 4x4 SLT for 28999. MSRP was 39850. I even got fog lights and premium seats. This was the advertised special, I paid for it and left with it in less than an hour. Only problem is I had to compromise, I wanted Limited slip rear (didn't get it) , but I was able to get the 6sp.
.
Price was defintely right! Every week they put another rig on ad special. alway an SLT 4x4. Sometime 2500 sometimes 3500. Lately the ad is at 29990. My wife did not like the color (Bright Silver) but I did, Hardly ever have to wash it!

I would not pay more than INVOICE - rebates for a truck.
Dealer invoice is not a published thing but they will show it to you. Ask for the invoice sheet with the breakdown of each option.
Therer's also all kinds of numbers on there that are "secret". For one you will see something that says like HB113200 which is $1132.00 holdback....
Again, invoice - rebates - maybe 500 bucks is very fair. I found FINDING the truck you want is the hardest part.

Agreed finding the truck is the hardest part. Whenever I've negotiated a new car purchase it's always been dealer invoice (which they've shown) minus rebates plus $500. I know that the dealer invoice still gives them some profit, but everyone's gotta earn a living, I've still been happy with the prices I've paid. It sounds like the people who are getting the ridiculously low prices are paying closer to what the dealer actually pays, but of course as we all know when dealers do that it's just to try to get people in the door so they can convince them to buy something else.
I think new car pricing is one of the biggest kept secrets in the world. Even after I had the deal done I could not get any info out of my dealer. One thing he did tell me though was that the dealership got some sort of credits($$$) from DC based on how many units they sell per week. He said if you were a high volume dealer, you could sell vehicles for very little profit and make up for it with the bonuses from DC.
