pulled my 19' airstream from socal to flint, mich. trailer is about 5k and i kept my speed down to 60 mph. i have a camper shell on the back of my truck and when i got into flint my trip computer showed 18.5 mpg average for the 2400 mile trip.

must be that good PS grey i am running.

un-freaggen believable!!

hate to burst your bubble, but you should have hand calced that. Overhead is usually off about .5 on stock truck, and up to 4 and 5 miles off on modified trucks.

Great mileage! Why would you want to go to Flint?

Tony

EDIT: My trip computer showed 18.3 and I hand calculated 18.1 at my last fill... so it's not too far off (after the re-flash of course! before that it was 2 MPG low consistantly)

Well, that depends on how much stock your going to put into something that has been shown to be a chronic liar!

FYI., mine shows 19.7, actual is 16.8

Yeah mine is off by about 2mpg after the fuel mileage/white smoke TSB.

That kind of mileage sounds believable to me, especially at 60mph towing only 5000lbs. My overhead is right on the money. Granted they are sensitive, I mean I've coasted down long hills and seen the mileage rise to 42mpg and then watched it fall as I motored up the other side. That just shows it's in tune with the throttle. It also indicates that long periods of idling or coasting can throw it way off and that's why I think hand calc is necessary, not the overheads unreliability.

My trip is right on. Last tank my average which was mostly in town hand calc'd at the pump at 17.8 and the overhead was 17.8. It's usually within 1/10th. I have the EZ and the Juice stacked which would nromally mess it up but I haven't been back to the dealer for any TSB's and my motor manufacture date is January 2004. No TSB's and it's going to stay that way. It just happened to be the right combo to make it accurate.

hey the 18.5 looks good on the trip computer. i think to do the number by hand would be too difficult given the fact that it is too difficult to put in an equal amount each fill up.

yeah, flint bites (sorry michiganders). hand to come and visit my 82 year old mother so i thought that a good excuse to get on the road. for the most part across the nation i paid less than $3.00 and filled up at "Flying J" truck stops. the flying j has the cheapest fuel except for one location. flying j hosed me for $3.17.

Speed has a huge factor on millage. I was towing 7000 lbs at about 75 and got 14.1. Slow to about 65, get about 15-16, 60mph I bet he was getting 17-18 mpg. Most trailers it's not the weight that's the factor, it's the wind resistance. Tow something that's extreamly heavy but very arodynamic, and you'd do it great, pull something that weighs 1000lbs and is flatter than a brick and yeah you'll get worse.

Careful what you say about mileage. The naysayers will come out of the woodwork and tell you that
1)your pencil is wrong
2)your calculator is wrong
3) your just plain lying.

I have been one of the people that gets great mileage right from the beginning. I consistently get 22 to 23 on the highway running 67mph. Hauling 8000lbs @67mph I can get 17mpg no problem. Now as stated increase the speed to 70 or 75 and the mileage goes into the toilet.
67mph on my truck is just a shade under 2000rpm, around 1990 or so.

Flint does bite! My brother used to live there....

Anyhow, best way to get accurate readings is fill the fuel all the way up into the filler neck everytime. Makes for consistant hand calculations.

Enjoy your stay in Michigan!

The only thing the overhead is good for is a compass and outside temp. Sometimes even those aren't accurate.

That's the exact point I was making.

Not if you have the fuel tank vent kit.
