Seems some critters or gremlins chewed up this fabric piece.
It's black, molded and fits at the top of the firewall where the hood sits.

Looking for the proper part name and what is it's purpose please?
Cabin air filter?....sound deadening?

Sound deadening. Looks like pack rats or some other critter. Pack rats got mine about nine years ago and it still looks like your picture.

Cowl pad, insulation/silencer....depending on what site sells the stuff.

Hard to fathom a dealer wanted $300 to replace one.

Also be sure to kill whatever was munching on that. Knawed wiring would not be as cheap and easy to fix.
