Question Uping your gross mass!

How high can one raise their gross mass with a 3500 dually? I've been crossing the scale at 13,850#'s on the truck and 9900 is the registered gross mass. I asked what they could boost it to at the highway safety office and they took a quick look at the truck and said 12,000#'s. My trailer is registered for 21,000 gross mass and I've had some left over gross on the trailer so they have been letting me slide, but my time is coming if I strike a bad scale day. I'd rather be legal and 12,000 is better but 14,000 would be perfect. What has any one upgraded to for gross mass? What documentation did you have to show? I only haul my own stuff, I'm not for hire and the truck is still considered a passenger vehicle but that will change over 10,000 #'s I think.
I hope you guys can give me some insight. Thanks. K.S.

The SRW is rated at 9900lbs. I think the dually is rated 11,500 to 12,000 depending on axle ratio (at least the 04.5 models are this way). I'm not aware of anything you can do to increase it beyond the mfr stated ratings - especially since the 3500 DRW already has the highest capacity of all the CTDs. Someone else might be able to recommend something.

As much as I hate to admit it, Ford has one-upped DC big time with their new GVWR and GCWR ratings on the 2005 model PSDs. Unless DC answers in kind, Ford stands to capture a large market of folks on the brink with large RVs and situations like yours.

Please, no anti-Ford flames. Reliability issues aside, Ford made a brilliant stategic move. Instead of trying to play the HP/TQ game, they went a different way and played right into the open arms of the towing community and "weight police".

I don't know what province you are in. B.C. the DOT is not yet bothering RV's for weight. But if you are commercial here you just pay more to up the combined gross vehicle weight CGVW The GVW on your plate must equal this amount Say your truck weighs 7500 the trailer and hitch weigh 12,000 you must be registered for at least 19,500 or get an over weight ticket. But not be over on any individual axle. Hope this makes sense.

I am on the east coast of Canada and I can pay to go higher, I'm just looking to go higher than the 12000 pounds on the door tag. The axles and tires are good for about 18,000 pounds, The brakes are bigger than a F-550...just looking for what data I can give to get beyond the 12000 limit (by a ton or so) I saw a guy that was good for 33,000 #'s combined legal...any input would be a help. There is a member on the board that posts in the towing section that removed his bed and registered his truck as a "tractor" which might help your situation.

His username is Haulin_In_Dixie and he is apparently legal at 33,000 pounds. PM him and he can probably give you some pointers.
