typical fuel mileage of 4x2 vs. 4x4
Do we know the typical fuel mileage of 4x2 vs. 4x4 stock trucks? I'm considering upgrading to a 05 4x4 from my 04.5 4x2. How much less should I expect with a 4x4? Yes, a change in fuel mileage is a concern of mine.
I can get 19.3 (hand calculated) when driving it easy.

I'm sure you'll hear from others....
Mine is 15.7 mpg since the reflash. I think that those that are driving 2500's or SRWs are getting slightly better mileage. I am pushing something with a drag coefficient similiar to a brick, plus 10%.
My Y2K was getting 17 mpg, it was a 2500, 4x4......so, you might lose about 2 MPG, give or take.
As always, YMMV, and this IMO.

My 4X4 2004.5 with some mods (see sig) is getting just about what you are with the 4X2. 19 - 19.5 hand caculated (a little better in town than the interstate). From what I have read, the reports vary widely from truck to truck.
Hope it helps.

Millage
The biggest mods I have on mine are intake and exhaust (in dealer now to get new injectors).
I'm on average getting about 17.5, and that's about 10 miles of back roads, and 10 miles of high way to work. So it's 50/50 driving City/Highway and I'm averaging that. When I go up to my Fianc`ee's parents up in Maine 18-19 are easy to see. I have a Quad Cab long bed, tool box, loaded to the gills with weight, so results may vary for a short bed. Trust me knowing if you get stuck in 2 wheel, or need 4 wheel, and you have it, it's great reasurance. Only wish the reasurance was in the dang motor
My dad has a 99, that thing will run and run. He has a 60hp edge EZ and he see's 22-23 in a 4x4.

Mine is the triple nickel 04 (not 600 04.5) and I have averaged 17.3 over the last 41K miles. The best I have seen is 21.5 hwy. Pulling the 5er I get 10. I believe the 4X4 costs between 2 and 3 MPG depending on you driving habits, tires, etc... I did some ciphering: 1000 miles @ 19MPG uses 52.6 gallons. 1000 miles @ 17 MPG uses 58.8 gallons. If you paid $3 per gallon then the difference is $18.60. Using these calculations, it will cost you around $20 per thousand miles. I rounded up because of the extra maintenance involved. That is $200 per 10,000 miles. If you drive 20,000 per year, your annual cost for 4X4 is about $400.
