Tsb 18-004-04
I took my truck in this morning to get the "fast idle TSB" done.
I had called two days ago to schedule it, and make sure they had the software. After about two hours of reading magazines in the waiting room, I was told it was ready. I picked up the keys from the cashier, went out and started my truck. Just for kicks, I decided to try out this new feature, and I couldn't get it to work. I went back in, and told the service rep that I couldn't get it to work. His reply "yea I know, we put this on one other truck and it didn't work either".
He went on to say they would make a phone call and try to find out why it was not working.
That sucks...I guess they were just hoping I wouldn't notice.
Has anybody else had a problem with this TSB?

Yes, I had tried to have this done a month after getting my truck, a 04.5. The dealership was not able to apply it. I have heard it will work once the new TSB for white smoke/poopr fuel mileage is applied. I'll know more myself monday as I have an appointment that morning to have both TSB's done.

I wonder if that might have been the issue with the dealer yesterday. When I went in they said that their computer wasn't working and it wouldn't interface with the truck's. Mind you, they didn't try it on my truck, they said this is what happened when they tried it yesterday on another one. So either 1) They were lying to get out of having to do the work (wouldn't surprise me, this dealership is mostly idiots) or 2) They aren't aware of the requirements for the TSB, and as such didn't know why the computer was spitting up garbage at them (also wouldn't surprise me, same reason as above).
Since I'm going to be out of town for most of next week I'll come back when I return and raise bloody hell if they don't do my TSB.

The fast idle TSb ( the one that uses the cruise control buttons, DOES NOT work on '04.5 trucks. Only '04 and ONLY with automatic transmissions.
When I had it done to my '04, I thought it didn't work also. Tried it before I left. Asked the service manager to have the tech that did the work come out & show me how to use it. He was friendly enough. Said it worked fine for him. Had him watch me do it. He spotted the fact that I had my foot on the brake pedal. Can't do that! That's one of the things that turns the fast idle off. Also dropping it into drive.

It sure do fool me then because mine is a 04.5 auto and the high idle works great on it.

The best insurance against the dealer screwing your truck up is this website and others like it. Go in knowing exactly what you want, describe what you want done in very specific detail to the service writer, do not sign the work authorization until you like the written instructions to the mechanic and verify everything before you drive it off the lot.
You will find clues about most potential problems on this website, use that information when you talk to the service writer, and when you can, talk to the mechanic. Most of the guys turning the wrenches appreciate that you are willing to go to some effort to describe the problem and don't mind talking to you about the soultion.
Knowledge is power. Thanks to Al Gore for inventing the internet and REAL thanks to Jack and the DTR membership for putting such an information rich site together.
I think what is confusing people is the early talk about the need to flash the ECM in the TSB this only needs to be done if you ECM has older code as mine did that doesnot have this option in it. The tech needs to then 1. update the code in the ECM to a version that supports the high idle (mine when from 15305153AF to 15305153AG). 2. then go back in with the DRB scanner and enable the the option.
There are trucks that came in with a version of the ECM code that supports this option already installed and only needs to be enabled using the DRB scanner.

I took my truck back in this morning, and told them they most likely did not enable the feature after they did the flash. They said that was not possible, but they agreed to have the service manager check it just to get rid of me.
In a few minutes, they came back, looking a little embarrassed. They said I was right, and apologized for me having to make two trips.
It works fine now, and I'm a happy camper.
