Ok gang, someone besides Sierra has towed!

What are your feelings about towing? Compared to the 2G?

Comments please folks, with SO or HO and 47RE, 5 speed or 6 speed trannies.

Sure want to know what you people know about towing. Heck, the book says you gotta tow in the first 6,000 miles so more or you out there must be towing.

Mileage? Your feelings? Getting ready to head towing with Daisy!

Hunter
Re:Towing
Wow Phil

You and I so far must be the only towers out there. I took my 3,500# boat/trailer out today for its winter wash etc. and then took a 75 mile spin to get some of my 500 miles of under 50MPH towing in.

Felt kinda different on the take off, kinda, hmm, sluggish, but I was tentative and did not put my foot in her. On the upper ends it is very nice. With the long box, none of that trailer bounce that you sometimes see at the hitch/trailer tongue area. Pretty solid unit all the way back. But, I did just replace my single axle boat trailer with a dual axle this summer, so don't know how the old Ferd woulda felt.

But, I do know this. Got some pretty good grades around here too and not to push the girl took them in 5th, 50MPH and did not know the load was back there. She wanted to run. So, gotta get some more miles on and then let her loose!

Went across the bridge to Washington, Diesel $1.42, Gas $1.26

Not too bad so filled Daisy and the boat and got the Thanksgiving bird also.

Hunter
Re:Towing
I am getting my reese 20k classic installed wednesday. I will then pull my 5th wheel to my brother-in-laws to store for the winter. I cant wait to see how this truck pulls compared to my 01' eth /dee. That truck had 3.54's this one has 4.10's. I will let you know. My trailer weighs around 11-12k.

Cat Cracker.
Re:Towing
While i haven't bought a rig yet, my dealer wants to make a sale. Recalling that I had mentioned wanting to tow my trailer to get a feel for the truck before I bought, he let me take one for a tug.

Truck - 2500 SLT QC SB 4x4 SO-47RE
My trailer - '71 21' Glendale house trailer (old-style, built like a brick **** house, full 3/8" steel frame, etc... -- around 4,500#)

Pulled about 15 km, mostly flat, some mild hills. Wow...nice ride! Even the SO is no slouch. Very smooth with only a hint of "cab kick" going over bumps. Definitely not the 3/4 ton truck of even 5 years ago! Brakes nice and very progressive (popped in the Teknosha Voyageur cont.). Mirrors very nice...could clearly see all four trailer tires. Manoeuvring the trailer...very nice and good steering range on the truck for parking.

I noted one thing, though, that I hope wasn't a short in my trailer wiring...Phil, Hunter...do your trucks light up their reverse lights while in "Park" (or "Neutral" for 6-sp?) and you hook the 7-wire plug into the truck? This Ram did, but I didn't check to see if the reverse lights went out when the truck was shifted into "Drive".

Overall nice truck. Nothing to do with the trailer but I found the truck a bit high...almost feel like stuff would be below the mirrors and bed rails. I think that for me, a 4x2 would be in the works -- just personal preference.

Cheers,
DT
Re:Towing
I have some seat time pulling my boat. GCW approx 16k+. Its a tag along 3-axle trailer, surge brakes, weight carrying mode, no load levelers (would interfere with surges).

Due to the majority of my driving, I selected a Single Rear Wheel truck this time. I used to pull with a Ford F350 CC Dooley. The SRW 2500 Ram isn't as solid feeling as my old Ford F350 Dually, but this motor! The old Ford was set up pretty stout in the rear, and it was absolutely solid with a towed load out back. You can tell something is back there towing with the Dodge, but it's no biggie.

Did I mention the CTD? The old motor (460 gasser) seemed to run out of breath over 60-65. The cummins easily pulls 6th over hill and dale around here comfortably @ 70 in cruise control. She's right in the middle of the fat part of the powerband. First time I pulled with the RAM (had the windows closed), I was chirping the rear tires in third gear while accelerating.

Heck, I can now easily pull the boat faster on the trailer than the boat can go by itself.

And with this quiet diesel engine and single rear wheels, I can also take the kids thru the drive-in windows and talk to the person on the other end of the microphone.

Thank you Dodge.
Re:Towing
DNAT

Nope, no problem with the backup lights on my tow application. Not sure why that would happen.

bulabula

You should feel that "something is back there" after all you are towing about 9,000# or so. That is not chicken scratch you know!

Hunter

Re:Towing
I've hauled 2 small loads of round bales in the past 2 weeks, trailer only weighing about 8,500lbs. I towed my big 6-horse living quarters from my house to my moms house the other day( only 15 miles) and it pulled very well. A little slow out of the hole but I expect that with the weight of that trailer. I'm gonna haul another Dodge 4x4 truck on a 42' flatbed gooseneck this week so well so how that goes. I really like how this truck holds OD so much better than my Chevy's and my older Dodge's. The 4.10's really help. Milage I'm seeing is about 16-20 empty, and 12-15 loaded, speed varying anywhere from 55mph up to 80 mph.

Re:Towing
Hunter, There are three of us towing with 2003s, Luke S has joined in. I think Fiver Bob would love to be part of our group, just hasn' been able to get his Jordan Control hooked up to that adjustable brake pedal. Should I offer to send him a used Tekonsha Voyager gathering dust in my garage? He could use it as a temporary fix and start breakin in his baby right.
Re:Towing
BobWhite has been particularly scarce as of late!

He is probably still tearing out his hair on getting his hitch in and fighting the good fight on the Jordan.

Told him just to pony on up to the Prodigy and be done with it in 5 minutes time!

Where oh where are you BobWhite?

Hunter
Re:Towing
Well, got the 20k classic reese 5th wheel hitch installed today. Pulled my camper about 20 miles to storage. I was impressed on how the truck pulled and handled. These trucks ride great anyway, but wow, you put some weight on it and it rides like a caddy! (well, almost..
) This truck did squat quite a bit more than my '01 2500 hd,qc,lwb, tow, camper spec.,eth/dee I had. But I think thats a good thing as the camper sits closer to being level. Cant wait 'till next camping season, get it out on the highway, and up some hills.

Cat Cracker.
