Question Tow Hook Removal

Is there an easy way of removing the driver side tow hook? I am having trouble getting a wrench or socket on the upper bolt on the back side of the tow hook because the intercooler is in the way. Will a deep offset box end wrench work or does something else need to be removed to access that bolt.

Thanks

You may need to move the intercooler. Installation instructions call for moving it.

I took my hooks off and put them back on last night, I used the following on the nuts in the back, 15mm deep and standard socket, and a 15mm open end, I used a 3/8" bar not a rachet to get in next to the intercooler, rachet head is too big. I did not unbolt the intercooler, but I did last time when I first put the hooks on initally, it did not make any difference.
I took them off and put them back on because I have a lightbar mounted between the hooks and the frame, I am having the light bar powder coated. I could have left the hooks off as I will be putting the light bar back on but I may need the hooks in the next couple of weeks. Took about an hour and half.

I had a heckofa time removing the tow hooks as well. The biggest problem is the nuts and bolts the factory used. They never seem to get loose and remain tight the entire thread length. I replaced them with zinc plated grade 8 - 3/8" bolts after I removed the towhooks. Now I have a bumper guard installed using the mounts. I don't remember what I used to remove them, but I know it was many different tools, alot of sweat, cussing and about 2hours work.

Thanks to all for the replies. I ended up using a 15mm deep offset box end wrench to get the bolts on the back side of the tow hooks. Didn't need to remove anything. Took off the tow hooks added a Randy Ellis light bar and reattached the tow hooks without any hassles. Took about an hour.

I found out how worthless those hooks are. Have you guys used them with a chain and hook?

They work fine if you use a nylon tow strap with a loop on the end.

The brackets are thin sheet metal, less than an 1/8" thick. I plan on cutting part of my brushguard off, on the 5" pipe, and boxing it in with 1/2" steel, then mounting the hooks to that.

I have one 10,000 pound swivel hoist ring bolted at each corner of my frame. I dont have to worry as much about pull direction.

Did you sleeve the chassis before torquing it down a few hundred ft/lb? I'm interested in getting some of those now, but am interested exactly how you mounted them. Also, their online store seems to be down currently, how much did you get them for?

for one, I have 5000# WWL not 10K that I mentioned before.
On the back, i used two bolts for my reciever hitch.
On the front, I used bumper mount loacations.
Bear in mind, I have a Nissan, not a dodge. Sleeving will probably work the best, but you will have to pop the clip that retains the existing SHCS and replace it with a longer bolt.
We use swivel hoist rings instead of eyebolts just about anywhere possible.

The side pull rings would probably work better since vehicles pull in pretty much one plane, I used the swivel hoist rings because of cost and availablity... [voice=monster garage] FREEEBBBIIEEE [/voice]
