Long-time member, but 1st-time posting. I just sold my 98.5, we need more room, 3 kids and the wife just weren't comfortable in the '98.

I am in the market for an '05 to early '07 quad cab or mega cab ('06 or '07).
Long story - short... there's a local '06 3500 Mega Cab SRW that has 84,000 miles on it. It fits what I'm looking for price-wise, features, etc but that mileage doesn't excite me. Just wondering opinions on whether it's even worth the look and what I need to be aware of with that model year, etc. Any responses are appreciated.

I have 86K on my 06 mega and it runs great. have had zero problems and I would trust to drive it anywhere.

i have not had any issues with steering or ball joints, but that would be first places to get checked.

Go get it and drive it anywhere.

I bought my 04 in 06.....it had 91,000 miles on it.....all heavy towing. It now has 250,000 miles on it.....just normal maintenance and a built tranny.

I say go for it. These motors arent even broken in 'til 75K miles. I wouldnt hesitate on that kinda mileage. Go drive it! I bet it drives like new...my 04.5 had 97K on when I sold it and it drove like a new truck!

its a diesel?? if so its just broken in.
thats not many miles i don't think. the way i look at buying a diesel is this:
if its got some miles on it, maybe more then the average, its a good truck that will most likely have fewer problems, because it was doing what it was meant to do, it was working. if its got few miles on it, that means it was sitting alot, or going to the store and back, and thats harder on the diesel then getting it hot or towing. keeping in mind that service still needs to be done, you can check the history.
we have work truck with 250,000kms that needed brakes, and tires, nothing else, and thats all makes, nothing has time to break or seize up cause they are working all the time, its when they sit for periods at a time, that stuff goes rusty and seizes up.
so look at over all condition, there are exceptions to this rule, if it was taken care of, then it will be a good truck, and most if any bugs will have been dealt with from the first owner.

I am in the process of rebuilding my front end at 160K, and its worth it! Just drove my buddies at 101K and it drives like a dream! You have nothing to worry about! If the price is right, buy it!

i have an 06 qc and have about 50k on it...only thing that has went wrong was left rear door lock stopped working, and u-joints front end at 41k, but that is due to snow plowing otherwise pretty flawless

Again, thanks for the replies. My debate is weakening. I guess my thing was my '98 only had 99k on it (I was the 2nd owner) when I sold it last week and I can't get the low miles thing out of my head. I'm going to go look at it and do the proper checks as I know these things will run forevr with the proper care and maintenance. Thanks

In the middle of August last year I bought my '06. The gentleman from the dealership that delivered it fell in love with my '03, and asked me to let him know if I was going to part with it. I didn't think I was going to, but I told him I'd make sure he got a shot at it first if I was thinking about a trade in or selling it.

The next week that same dealership had an insane sale on new trucks (late August early September) and I really needed the manual for towing. I did the deal and had them deliver my '08 as I was leaving to go back overseas and couldn't drive it home myself, and had traded in my '03 as part of the deal. I made sure the same guy that delivered my '06 was the same guy that delivered my '08.

It never made it to the dealer's lot. My '03 had 88k on it (second owner from 69k on up) and drove just as well as my new truck does.

I've got 72K and have had zero problems... drives like the day I bought it. No rattles, no transmission, ball joint or front-end issues. Engine runs great and uses no oil between changes @ 7K (Amsoil 15x40). Like others have said; if driven and maintained responsibly, I believe these engines are just getting broken in @ 75K. GET IT!

I'd say no problem as long as you account for worst case future repairs.
Figure $30k for a low mile used Mega 4x4 and go from there...couple thousand off for impending front end work and u joints, few thousand for impending transmission. Takes you down to $25k. Another few thousand off for wear and tear. If you could get it for $22-23k and it's in very good shape, thats the right price. If you get a good one that doesn't need any repairs for a while, you're money ahead.
A buddy just got $22,600 for his 06 Mega with 45k miles, SLT 4x4, not very clean inside, needs $2-3k in body work, tires shot, no extras or accessories, etc. I wouldn't have paid that much for it, but kinda proves they're holding their value pretty well.
Biggest thing is how well the truck was cared for.

bought my 07 quad 4x4 SLT about a month ago.. It had 84+ k good tires good body . Had 2 codes.. someone said probably low battery. I cleared the codes & they haven't come back

regardless of what others have done, you need to think about if buying a truck that has 84 000 miles is going to last long enough for you-based on your average yearly mileage.

If you put on 50k per year-that truck will be worthless in no time (only based on its mileage, not on condition). Some people ( like me ) don't think a vehicle with 200,000 miles is worth much...
If you put only 10k per year on, its not that big of a deal. You will get tired of it before it miles out.

I am sure the truck will be just fine-like others have said, there will be some things you will have to address. But do whatever YOU are happy with. You will be the guy behind the wheel.
