if you run any loads on your truck the tolls are higher too in parts of NY and on the Penn turnpike they have scales at the booths took me awhile to figure out why it cost me more to run on some days then on others.

I cannot believe dual wheels are 2 axles. This sounds like they learned the wrong stuff by osmosis as opposed to being competent and knowing the correct interpretation of the toll fee.

Running through Illinois and Florida this past June I was only charged for the actual axles, dually didn't make any difference!

Well, at least here in Texas, they still know the difference between an axle and a wheel. Tolls are higher when I'm towing our tandem axle 5th wheel ($3.75 for 4 axles - $ 1.25 for the first 2 axles, then $1.25 for each additional axle over 2), but my 3500 dually running bobtail pays the same $1.25 at any of the Harris County (Houston) toll road booths as my Acura 3.2TL-S or my wife's Durango.

I don't believe this is true? I've read on some NJT literature that dual rear wheels are a higher class (3 I think) then a regular auto.

Now, if they catch the fact that you have dual wheels or if you have EZ-Pass is another story!

About a year ago up near Chicago, I had to pay commercial tolls on my dually.

I don't think they care if it's commercial or not. It's just 1/2 the car toll per axle, and my understanding was that duallys qualified as two axles.

Did you go through the manual lanes?

TCould only go through the manual lanes since I didn't have a pass. Florida turnpike was a pricey way to go, but it made the trip north a lot faster!

On a sidebar, hate to think what it's like down that way right now with the storms!

How can any agency possibly charge for two rear axles on a dually when there is only one? What would they do if you simply refused to pay extra for a nonexistent axle? With (apparently) no law to support the extra toll fee how could you ever be prosecuted? This just doesn't make sense...

I doesn't make common sense. I routinely cross the Hudson river in NY. Wifes car... $1.00 my DRW over 7000 lb truck.... $2.50
The complete northeast in in on the scheme...... NY, Mass, Maine, NJ..... seems like multiple tires on the axle give them an excuse to put some expotential component on an auto toll.

I once saw a lifted dually with a HUGE (wide) single rear wheel. I wonder what he pays for tolls?

Get an EZPASS and it will be the same.... you are a "car", non-commercial with 2 axles...

Hate to say this but I don't know why everyone doesn't have the Evilpass!

Funny you bring up tolls. While coming home on the Ohio Turnpike this summer, the lady at the toll asked if I "was carrying anything inside the truck?" I said "no, but am wondering why you asked me that?"

She said my truck was heavier than 7000 lbs and that I was required to pay a higher toll fee. I said that my truck weighed more than 7000 brand new from the dealer. My normal GVW is around 7600 running around town.

I did neglect to ask if the toll booths had scales under them - shame on me. But thats what it seemed like.

I did have to pay the next higher toll fee.

I second the motion for an easy pass. Get one for the car, and take it with you in the truck. Has worked like a champ back and forth to NYC a couple of times.
I believe the Ohio tolls DO have scales... they're in the ticket dispenser I think... When you pull up with a heavy load and the ticket gets spat out of "truck" ticket dispenser which is a few feet higher...!

Case in point. I run 33 miles each way daily on the MassPike. My Class 1 toll is $1.30. If I had a dually (Class 5) my toll would jump to $2.35, or $2.10 more each day, or $10.50 more per week. That's significant when you consider a daily commute.

On another note, if you're tempted to use your transponder from you car in your 6 tire truck, just don't get caught. I was using a transponder in my new car which I forgot to register with the EZ-Pass system. Something happened to the battery inside the transponder and it suddenly stopped working. I started to receive a daily stream of $50.00 fines each one with a picture of my vehicle. After accumulating a $600 tab, I was able to determine what was wrong. But I had to plead my case for each citation which was a royal pain and there you're guilty until proven innocent.

This is EXACTLY the point I made earlier in this thread. Transponder is registered to the vehicle and TYPE of vehicle.

It is illegal and, not to mention dishonest, to use your EZ Pass registered to your passenger car in your dually truck to try to get away with paying a lower toll.

It's been a while since I signed up for Ezpass.... I checked the website and I guess I am wrong because now when you go to sign up....

Requirements: For individually owned or leased vehicles with two axles and: A maximum gross vehicle weight of 7,000 pounds
Single rear tires
For cars, vans, pickup trucks, and motorcycles

So all you morally conscious people better sign up for a commercial EZpass now because technically even if you DO have SRW, you are illegal...

When I signed up for EZPASS (this was years ago) it said nothing about single rear wheels or 7000 GVW...
