tire pressure questions (towing & empty)
tire pressure questions (towing & empty)
i have the BFG rugged t/a tires on my 2500. the supplemental sticker on my door says to run them:
50 front/40 rear - empty
60 front/70 rear - max towing
i have a travel trailer that is 5000-5500 lbs. and 600-700 lbs. tongue weight. i have my weight distribution hitch adjusted so the front drops 1/8" and the rear 1/2" with the trailer hooked up. it rides smooth so i think i have it tweaked pretty good.
since we take a lot of weekend trips, it gets old inflating/deflating the tires all the time. i'm wondering if there would be a good PSI i could keep my tires at all times? i was thinking that 55 front and 55 rear might be good. i don't know if there are any downsides to having 55 in the rear when empty like traction or tire wear? i'm sure the ride will be a little stiffer, but i don't mind that.
what pressures do you generally use for empty and towing a trailer? any suggestions on what i should run?

There is a tire preasure table that came with your truck.
My 2500 says 50 front unless regular travel over 65 MPH then go to 60 psi.
Back 40 psi empty...I run 50 as I have some junk in the back of the truck
If I run 70 in the back empty..the truck bounces all over the road.
The table tells you how to adjust for load.
I wish I'd checked the psi on the 3500 when I was test driving them...because I bet they were at 70 rear and the ride was terrible.
If they were adjusted correctly per no load I bet they would have riden better and I would have bought a 3500 instead of a 2500.
I find on this vehicle tire preasure and load have a huge effect on ride.

i run 70 on the fronts and 80 on the rears on both dually's due to the tire manufactures says to run 80 in them but the friont rides smoother with 10 lees then rears. i wouldnt run less then 10 what is printed on the tire but i tow all the time
I have run pretty consistently 70 all the way around since my truck was new, tire wear has been great as I have got 53 k on my original tires but will be replacing them next month due to wear.

I run 65 PSI F&R for everyday driving, I'll go 80 if towing heavy. The ride is a bit harsher, but the tire wear & MPG are better than with the DC suggested pressures...I got over 70K miles in the factory tires on my 2001 F350.
Don't tow much except for 5,000 lb boat occasionally so can really say anything about pressure there but as far as running empty do as recommended, 50 front and 40 rear. I have 70,600 miles on my BFG's with several thousand left on them. Just make sure you rotate them every oil change.
