Stock wheels, Best aftermarket tire, & load rating??

Hello All, I decided not to get any aftermarket wheels simply because of $$$ and too many complications. The only thing is, Im getting tired of seeing my truck from a distance and seeing those puny and skinny stock tires!!

I would like to keep my Factory Rims, but go to a tire size like a 285 or 33", and something that is a little bit wider, that will fit a stock wheel. No, I dont want H2 wheels, not looking for a tire as big as a 315. Would like to stay around the 285/33" tire simply because its not a huge differance, but will look better, and If I don't calibrate the speedo, it won't be off by much.

Now for the other question, my local tire dealer said I need an "E" rating tire on the Ram, because of the weight of the cummin's. Anyone else been told this?? I can see what he means, but from reading all the othe posts on tires, I really havn't seen anyone buying alot of "E" rating tires?? Just for kicks, are the H2 tires "E" rated??

I have BFG's 285/70/17's on mine. they are awesome........though they are D rated. Haven't seen too many E rated.

I have the "H2" tires 315/70/17's and they are D rated.
In my opinion they look awesome and fit the truck perfect.
I don't think you will find a tire in this size with an E rating. Could be wrong.

If you don't want these tires then most likely you will just need to keep looking at pictures to find what you like.

I have never heard of any problems with the D rated tires on these trucks and many use them. If you are pulling weight and E is important then most likely will have to stick with smaller size.

I have ran 35" bfg muds and swamper ssrs on my ford before I traded up to the dodge, personally I liked the swampers better, they did every thing the bfgs did but better, even tread wear, the only down side is that they are louder but in my eyes that aint a down side, I am sure swamper is working on the 17" rim size but right now choices are a little limited, oh and the swampers had a max psi of 65, bfgs are 60 (I believe, correct me if I am wrong) and the swampers, at least in the 35x12.50s 16.5, are 10 ply

interco tire makes super swampers. Some of them would have the rating to hold the weight except that they will probably wear really fast on a heavy truck.

There's a reason many of us are running 315s...........

Availability! They may be D-Rated but they are rated to hold the same weight as my stock E-Rated 265s. The difference is in the stiffness of the sidewall. My 315s perform perfectly even with 12,000lb behind me.....

FYI, you can run 315s on stock rims, not just H2 rims. You will probably get a little rub though.

I just got a set of Toyo Open Country M/T mud terrain tires. They come in either a 265 or 285/75R16 load range E. They're the only mud terrain tire I've ever seen in those sizes as an E. They seem pretty good so far. Not noisy.

I am running BFG 285s on my truck and though they are D rated they have the same weight rating as an E tire. There are a couple of pictures in my gallery showing what they look like on the stock rims. I really wasn't interested in going taller I just wanted the triple ply side wall since I am running around in the cactus down here in south Texas. I tried to buy 265s but the tire dealer didn't want to sell them to me because of the weight rating. The 285s were the smallest tire that had the same weight rating as the stock tires.

I have about 77,000 miles on mine and they look good for another 15 or 20K. I never expected to get this kind of mileage out of a set of tires and this may be a fluke but based on this experience I will replace them with another set just like them.

my d rated 315/70/17's will hold the same amount of weight as the stock E rated. Generally speaking you want to keep it at 3000 lbs per tire or more.

I am about to buy some 285 BFG's myself. That is the same size that is on the PowerWagon truck and I think they look perfect. I know alot of guys have the 315's and are very happy with them...but IMHO they are just a little to big. I am also concerned about power loss going to a tire any bigger than 285, especially since I have 3:73 gears. Another concern, is 5th wheel clearance height. I would think my 5th wheel would have trouble hooking up if I went any taller in the rear than 285's.

I went to Discount Tire the other day to get a free tire rotation. While I was there, I got to talking to the manager and they offered me $300.00 for my used 265's plus spare. I am thinking about taking them up on the offer and negotiate a good price on 5 new 285/70/17 BFG ko's. My current stock 265's have 26,000 miles on them...and they are holding up very well. I am sure the 285's will wear very well too.

Just picked up a set of Toyo 295/70R17 MT. They are load range E (128P) 3970 LBS @ 80 PSI, 33.5 inches in diameter. Standing side by side they appear to be just as tall as my existing 35x12.5 pro com AT's. They are however 1" narrower 9.5" compared to 10.5" for the Pro Com's. Measured the cicumference of both tires they are 105" (603 rev per mile) for the pro com's and 103" (615 rev per mile) for the Toyo MT's. The Pro Com's on stock wheels rub slightly on extreme turns (not a proplem as it has caused no damage to truck or tire in 35,000 miles). The toyo MT's should run free on the stock 8" rims.

"TexasCTD", I wish I could find a tire dealer near me that was willing to do a similar deal for my stock tires. I only have 1,900 mi. on my truck. Your thinking like me, I would like the 285's for the same reason, I also have the 3.73 rear, and I think its a perfect size tire to fill up the well a bit, give it a better footprint, and not compromise power.

I don't know why Dodge hasn't listened to the customer about this subject, Even with the brand new 06's, there still putting the 265's on them, and they make the truck look like its got a "weak set of legs".

I never thought about "trading" in my tires before till the manager mentioned it. Apparently there is a market for people wanting or needing truck tires and can't afford to pay outrageous prices for them. At least here in the Dallas Area. If there are no "Discount Tire" tire stores in your area, just try another big name tire co. and see what they say.
