stereo

After buying my new to me truck I discovered that the speakers in the front doors were missing. My first question is what size are those. 6x9's or what? Also if I do those speakers I would like to upgrade the rears as well what size are those and are they only in the doors or behind the back seat as well? And finaly is the stock CD player powerfull enough to power some better speakers?I have a good fairly new head unit that I would put if I had to. Thanks

Have you looked at Crutchfield? They would have the info you need, and be able to not only get you replacements but also anything else you'd need.

There is a OEM amp available for about $300 that ties into the stock head unit for running better speakers. I'll see if I can find the info again but it might take a day or two.

+2 on Crutchfield. And they send you the wiring harness adapters for free, along with excellent instructions and any required adapters for speaker mounts all for free.

The fronts are round, I think they are 6" - maybe 8". The rears are 6x9 but Crutchfield has an easy to use build section where you put in your make and model and they show you all the speakers that fit, and what you have to do to make the ones that don't fit work for you.

They sell a lot of radio improving amps that clean your signal and reprocess it. I just bought a new head unit, and again Crutchfield gave me the wiring harness adapters and a price so low the stereo shop where I had it installed (for $40 including sub-amp, head unit and all wiring) thought I was BSing them as they had it super sale priced at twice the money.

Check them out.

Crutchfield is great. Fantastic service and tech service is top notch. that being said many times Amazon has much better pricing once you know what model speakers will and will not fit W/ correct spacers.

I know you can put 6x9's in the fronts of 3rd gens and 6.5's in the rear. Not sure about the 2nd gens. It takes like 10 minutes to pop off the door panels and see what is there.

nope ...defies all logic...6x9's in the fronts and 6.5's in the backs. go figure.
there is also a really neat flat subwoofer that fits under the seat if you don't want to take the space under the rear seats...

That looks pretty cool, and it gets good reviews for an inexpensive little unit!

I'm running a single JL 10" with a 500W Alpine amp on it. I'd like to upgrade to a 12" JL7 but I haven't won the lotto yet.....

The 10" JL W1 is only about $140 for the speaker, the 10" W7 is about $640. That's just the raw speaker.....

But what a speaker it is...

Just as a note to anyone thinking about putting an amp to the factory speakers (front 6x9's, rear 6 1/2"), they are paper-cone.... Or at least they were in my 2006 QC 4x4. The guy who does all the audio work on my vehicles hasn't seen paper-cone speaks since he had a '97 Neon.... sheesh. Anyways, if your truck is also equipped with this junk- an amp isn't gonna do much for you. I just installed twin 10" Alpine subs under the back seat, and was planning on just amplifying the factory door speakers like I did in my old Chevy (plastic cone speaks)- until I saw the "high quality" that came from the factory. Ended up doing front and rear Focal's. Little pricey- but wow! what a difference. Something to think about-

I would stick to 6.5 front and back, better sound quality as a round speaker.

Rip,
Can you elaborate on this some more. I always thought 6x9's were better at producing lower bass tones.

Toothmech,
I have not heard a worse sounding stock stereo in 20years until I bought my Dually.Brought me right back to the '70's. I replaced the head unit and am now slowly replacing the speakers. The head
unit made a big difference already. Can't wait to get a good set of speakers to match. Of course the "symphony by Cummins" is always pimpin hard.

In my experience 6.5 is the better resonate performer, in a component set you get a more fluid bass, as with 6x9s you can sometimes get a distorted, cancelling bass. The round speakers will reproduce all ranges of frequencies better making for a better overall sound quality. I run component Memphis Sync carbon fiber speakers up front, coaxials in the back hooked toa 75x4 Memphis amp.
