Angry steering wheel peeling

So Ive started to notice the 12 o'clock position on my leather wrapped steering wheel is peeling already!!!! the truck is barely a year old w/ 18K on it. When I bought my 2000 it had the same problem (only worse) but it was used so there wasnt much I could do. This is way to soon.

Im taking it to the dealer for some other stuff and will mention this to them as well but what do ya'll think, will they cover this or do anything about it????

anyone else experiencing this????

thanks
Jeff

Mines doing the same thing. It's been doing it for a couple months. My truck just turned 1 and has 21K.

I thought about taking it in and complaining, but I don't think that will go very far. Maybe someday when I'm feeling contrary and have nothing to do.

yea, thats what I was figuring......still seems kinda pathetic that can happen on a 1 year old truck. None of our wreckers have peeling steering wheels and we always have sweaty/greasy/muddy hands, o yea and their all fords

actually back when i got my 03 this was a problem too (duh) and many on this forum said that DC allows one steering wheel to be replaced within the 36,000/3 yr warranty... go get it checked out, you should get it replaced... when you do, put a cover on it!

Yeah, mine started doing that at about the 2 year mark. Now I wipe it down periodically with some Hubbard's boot grease, and that seems to keep it from progressing.

My last Ford had a leather wheel, and after driving it for 10 years it was still like new.

I think this is more of a quality issue than a PH issue, or at least if it is a PH issue Ford seems to have solved it a long time ago...

Ii had mine replaced on my 02 under warranty for peeling. My truck was under the 3/36 and they never said a thing about it. I think it was about $900 for the wheel so get it done soon.

I had the dealer look at mine and they didn't replace it, normal wear and tear Now it has a cover to prevent further damage.

Chezz why do some dealers make it difficult and fight MAKING MONEY.Hey I'd take all the peelers I could when I was a service writer and service manager. Its a LEGIT claim.I did TONS of center consoles on trucks in for work. They got all distored and discolored from sweaty arms leaning on them.I use to bring it up to the owners with 30 plus thousand miles. It was a $500 plus claim and just took a FEW minutes.Did MANY a STEERING WHEEL also.Great money and CUSTOMERS always THANKED ME for looking out for them..Its ALL in how you write it up.Go to another dealer or call 1-800-992-1997 and *****(have vin number handy)get you a NEW STEERING wheel. Its COVERED 3/36!!!! Did TONS of STEERING wheels on Nissan and CADDY and DODGE products. Some WOMEN use TONS of hand LUBE.It eats them to pieces.Never had a claim from any of the above manufactures kick back or questioned. Some PERSONAL in DEALERS spend MORE TIME getting OUT of MAKING money and NOT taking care of a customer then saying YES SIR I'll get one coming for you and when it comes in you can wait on it,Any THING ELSE you NEED.What a idiot.I'll take MY truck in right at the end of 3/36 warranty for a center console.Already PREPED the service manager. He smiled and said I did LOTS of 2nd generations for the same reason.

My 98 wheel is shredded very badly. Previous owner said the owner before me wore "rough gloves"..
I put a cover on it on the drive home from TX.

seems like the smooth layer on top peels off and exposes the "orange peel" feel underneath, only gets worse from there

guess ill add this to the list of the things for the dealer to look at.

Saddle soap is one of the worst things you can put on leather. It is a soap and contains Lie (spelling??) and fatty acids. Use some good all-natural leather oil when you clean the rest of the inside ( no more than once every 2 wks.). I personally like the Obenhaufs ( again spelling??) brand boot oil (you can use this stuff on your skin) that most of your uper end boot makers recommend. (ie... Whites, Nicks, Danner etc...). Every time you go to re- apply use a rag with some rubbing alcohol on it to wipe the wheel down and remove the old oil. This will open up the pores and allow the leather to absorbe the new coat. (Rubbing alcohol will also work for stretching tight boots and shoes) Never seen a wheel peel with this treatment even after several years!
