Some questions about my 07' 5.9

Hey guys I recently traded my 05 Hemi in on an 07 quad cab 5.9. I LOVE it but I have a few questions.

First off, when I put the truck in drive, it feels real rough and jerks a lot compared to my 5.7, is this normal?

Next, sometimes it seems like my tranny is sort of "searching" for a gear. With no load, it just seems like it can't decide on which gear to chose. Any idea if this is normal and if there is a tsb for this? I know the tranny I have sucks so this worries me.

And lastly, after driving around with the a/c on, when I go to turn the truck off, it makes a loud screech sound when I turn it off? I don't actually leave the a/c "on" but if I have been driving with it on and then turn it off then the truck off, it makes a screech sound.

Mostly dumb questions but I am new to diesels and just want to make sure everything is going good with my truck. Other than those problems, I love this **** thing.

Thanks guys, Pat.

Talking Yep all normal

Mine does all the things yours does. A diesel will not be as smooth as a gasser. The transmission does this when I feather pedal it, step a little harder it will stop. The chirp when shutting off as we call it is also normal, enjoy your new ctd men

I'm sure you will get some more detailed answers but ill be the first.

putting it in gear will feel a lot more aggressive than a gasser the 750 idle speed and torque of the cummins wants to fight the trans as you put it in gear (sort of) not the best explanation but it is normal for the most part.

what speeds is most of the hunting happening at? my 05 was the worst around 40-50 mph 3rd to 4th up when not on the gas and down when i was. and if that was not enough the torque converter locking and unlocking at the same time drove me nuts.

a few things you could try are 1. don't drive slow or between 40-50 mph 2. i used to keep the tow haul on all the time and that helped. it keeps the shift points higher and wont let it up shift so fast. 3. i did not but you have OD lockout also. when not going on the highway or over 50 try keeping it locked out. it will just be a 3 speed auto instead of a 4 speed.

and as was said the chirp is normal if you want to call it that. my 01-03 and 05 all did it so it wont really do anything except get strange looks from people near by. i thought i herd there was a fix but I'm not sure but it is mostly an annoyance more than anything else.

enjoy your truck....chris

I have never experienced the the things you are talking about. My engine is real smooth, does not jerk at all and no sounds when I turn the A/C off. The only time you feel that any engine movement is when you turn the engine off, due to the gobs of torque these engines deliver. How is you mpg? I wonder if you possibly have an injector that is sticking open? I would get this checked, does not sound normal!

This is normal. The Cummins has so much torque that it literaly rocks the truck. The Hemi is weak compared to your new rig.

Next, sometimes it seems like my tranny is sort of "searching" for a gear. With no load, it just seems like it can't decide on which gear to chose. Any idea if this is normal and if there is a tsb for this? I know the tranny I have sucks so this worries me.

Again, somewhat normal. Don't feather the pedal, give it some fuel and get on into top gear.

And lastly, after driving around with the a/c on, when I go to turn the truck off, it makes a loud screech sound when I turn it off? I don't actually leave the a/c "on" but if I have been driving with it on and then turn it off then the truck off, it makes a screech sound.

Virtually all Cummins engines do this. Used to own a shop and you always heard them do this. I always associated it with the incredible torque and when you shut it down it stops faster than the acessories can so the serpentine belt will squeek over the pully's a little.

Mostly dumb questions but I am new to diesels and just want to make sure everything is going good with my truck. Other than those problems, I love this **** thing.

No such thing as a dumb question. All normal things people ask when transitioning from gassers to diesels. Enjoy your new ride. BTW, the new transmissions are really pretty good units, holding up well and lasting a long time. You just have to fortify it if you are going to mod your truck alot.

So as far as the chirp, Diesel motors are an extreamly high compression motor compared to gassers, as a result when the motor is shut off, it stops turning extremly fast causing the fan belt to "skid" to a stop. The chirp you are hearing is the belt "chirping" as it stops.

The truck does not make the sound when I turn the a/c off, it is when I turn the truck off. My mpg is great actually, I am averaging about 16.2 give or take(I know the overhead isn't all that accurate) around town with the a/c on and occasionally pulling a trailer with two big mowers. I absolutely love this truck so it is hard to keep my foot out of it and not let the turbo spool

Thank you for all of the responses guys, makes me feel a lot better.

...and what makes you come to the conclusion that there may be an injector problem?

pitrack,

Everything sounds normal except the hunting for a gear. Mine will do that if the shift lever is not exactly in the right spot. Next time you notice it try moving the lever a bit to clear it up. Maybe it's out of adjustment. The PRNDL seems kind of imprecise.

My 07 never makes the chirp when sutting it down it kind has the rough shut down feel. I know some of the older ctd have the chirp when shutting off.

If you look in the owner's manual it will note the rough shut down. I think they refer to it as gear shutter that is worse on manual transmission equiped trucks. My truck shakes pretty hard at shut down. As said above, lots of compression makes it shut off quickly and tightly.

Mine does all that you say, the fan squeak is normal and if I limp foot it it searches for gears kinda abruptly and is more prevalant after going to larger tires. It aint a lexus, it's a Diesel truck !
