Score! (tires)
Score! (tires)
Got lucky on tires this year; which is unusual for me, I usually get hosed one way or another.
I needed new tires for the race car. That's $1,300 or so. If I didn't get new tires, my season was over. But, I didn't have $1,300 handy, and wasn't sure where the money would come from (racing is expensive).
So, I decided to balance my check book. Yes, that sounds strange. Whenever I enter a charge in my check book, I write in a few extra dollars. Whenever I write in a deposit, I write in a few dollars less. I haven't balanced the check book in years. But I occasionally check the balance, and see that there's more than "should be".
Guess how much I found? You got it, just about $1,300! Woo Hoo, free tires! And, BTW, I took the championship this year.
The Michelin tires I have on the truck have almost 60K miles on them. Still have another 5K miles or so in them. But I hate starting the winter with marginal tires. If this was May, I wouldn't sweat it. But it's November, so......
Today I bought a brand new set of General Grabber HTS 245/75-17, E range, for $500 cash. They were new truck take offs from a GM product, with 29 miles on them. They even smell new. Cruising through Craig's List out of boredom saved me about $300.
Probably not the best tire in the market. But most likely the best tire for $125 OTD. I'll get them mounted before I head through WY next month. Snow is predicted for that week end.

Haven't bought a set of tires at a tire shop for my personal rigs in at least 10 years, prolly more. Couple buy 3 get 1 free deals from Pro Comp. Mostly used tires off of CL though. Last set on the truck, brand new 285 BFG AT's, $700. This set, almost new 295 Toyo MT's, $800. That's close to a grand saved by buying used, or to put it another way, premium oversized tires for the cost of skinny OE road burners.
Picking up a set of Nitto Invo's for the car this weekend. Brand new, too big to fit on the guy's hot rod project. $500 for a $1300 set of tires.
