Scanner for trouble codes

Howdy, Thinking of buying a code reader or scanner. I have an 06 Dodge cummins in Laramie trim. Just wondering what you are all using and if you have any recommendations and places to buy.

Thanks.

If you just need to see what codes it has, you can read it on the odometer display by doing the keystroke trick. Then you can look up the codes on the net. Some of the programmers like the Smarty have it built in. You can read and clear codes.

I know the key access route and don't have and will not be getting a programmer. I want a tool that reads and clears codes. I fiqure if I can use it on my truck, 97 Grand and the wifes 2010 Wrangler it will pay for itself.

Can anyone recommend one trough their personal use as to a good unit?

I have the Digital ODB2 made by Innova Electronics.

I bough it at Autozone sevaral years back for $50.

It reads and clears multiple codes just fine.

The book it comes with lists them all and there's a CD as well.

It works an all 96 and newer and requires no batteries.

I think any of the scanners you pick up at an auto place would work just fine.

That thing's paid for itself 10 times over in time and money saved!

My personal opinion, I would just take it to an auto parts store and have them read and clear the codes for free. Unless you are reading and clearing codes once a week...

I was a little disappointed when my Actron scanner wouldn't give me anything but basic emissions info and top level codes.
