Question Reverse Feed to trailer

I'm trying to hook up addtional reverse lights so I can see better at night. But I can't seem to find the reverse wire to the trailer hitch plug.

According to a couple of searchs it's either violote or yellow. I don't have a violote and my yellow doesn't show any voltage when the Key is on and the truck is in reverse.

Any clues to the correct wire color would greatly be welcome.

Thanks.

As best I can tell, there's no provision for reverse lights in the 7-round trailer wiring connector. You may indeed need to get a 12V power wire to a relay and have the relay energized from a wire form the reverse lamps near the taillights themselves.

On my '03 I believe it's the center pin.

My 5er is a toyhauler, so it has a couple of porch type lights on the back, each with a rocker switch on the light housing.

Since whenever I have to back into someplace dark at night, I either have a spotter or get out and look myself, I just turn those on while I'm back there...

Perhaps it would be easier for you to do something similar- Just mount a porch light on the back with a manual switch on the light, wired to the trailer's power... As a side benefit, you would have an extra exterior light, even when unhooked from the truck, which could be handy.

I believe that is the standard set-up. However, when I hooked mine up, I used the hot from the trailer plug to feed the lights, and tied into the reverse light wire to trigger the relay.

According to my 04 service manual it's the WT/LG wire.

My trailer has reverse lights built in from the factory and they illuminate when I put the truck in reverse. All factory wiring on truck and trailer.

Sorry but I gotta ask....do your truck reverse lights illuminate with the key on and the shifter in "R"?

Yes, That's the first thing I looked for when I walked to the back of the truck. I'll Test the wt/lg wire here in a bit.

Thanks for the help.

If it's stock to the 7 pin RV connector, it's the center pin that has the backup lite feed

You could always feed from the 4 pin connector under the bumper and install a toggle switch in the cab if you cant figure it out. I'm thinking about doing the same thing.....
