Painted Black Wheels

Anyone have any info/tips/warnings about painting a set of stock chrome- plated steel wheels?? I've tried PlastiDip, but I didnt have the same success as everyone else lol. And powder coating isn't in the budget. What about balancing and changing tires? Ive already purchased the Duplicolor Wheel paint, just looking for some much needed info. Any and all help would be appreciated.

Don't think you'll get anything to stick well to the chrome IMO

You'll need to rough up that chrome as much as possible. Get them media blasted. I had an old ford I tried to paint the bumpers black and it didnt work well at all. You'd be best to wait and save up to get them powder coated.

Try duplacolors black crome spray or shoot them first with self etching primer. I've done both for friends and they have lasted a couple years so far.

Update: Went with the Duplicolor wheel paint and self etching primer. Had good results, just a few thin spots. Im gonna go back over em with a couple more coats in a couple weeks when I get a chance, just to even it all out. Overall, turned out well. I guess time will truly tell.

I would be curious as to why the PlastiDip didnt work for you. Mine have been done for 2 years now with now issues.

I'm really not sure why the Plasti Dip didnt work for me, I attributed it to the fact that my wheels were chrome and I didnt sand them any before I sprayed, but I dunno

Mine are chrome also. Maybe they just were not clean and free from cleaning chemicals or something. I actually just did the chrome front bumper also temporarily until I decide what type of bed liner will match my rear Backwoods bumper the best.

Really? Wow, maybe I'm just not too good with the Plasti Dip lol. I've considered going back over my painted wheels with the Plasti. When I did it, it gave a smoother, more uniform finish than the paint has now. What did you prep with?
