One more time, High Idle 2005 model

Hello All CTD Drivers,

I purchase my new Dodge CTD about two months ago and have been reading this site to keep myself up to date on the aftermarket goodies.

Keeping to the point, I would like to know if 2005 CTD with auto trans have this HIGH IDLE option?

I made my first mistake by stopping by the dealer ship and asked for a fix on the Slow engine warm up, of course their first answer was “too bad” “can’t help” and so on.

I was ready for this and pulled out the TSB 18-004-04 thanks to some of you and Geno’s Garage, this got their attention up to the point they got to the date, Manufacture on or before December 10, 2003.

Again with the “too bad so sad” “can’t help” story. Does someone have a document or something I can go back into battle with?

I read some threads on HIGH IDLE and did not see someone with an 2005 with this option.

Thanks for any help!!!

There are 2 high idle features, one enabled (should be) and one that "can" be enabled.

The first is temperature controlled. If the outside air is below a certain degree, think it is 40 or lower, then the engine will ramp up to 1000 rpm when sitting idling in park with nothing touching the excellerator or brake petal.

The second requires the dealer to enable it. It will allow you to manually set high idle by using the cruise control buttons. Turning on cruise and pressing increase sets 1100 prm, increace cruse by 100 rpm up to 1500. To decrease use the decrease cruise button and lower to 1100 rpm by 100 rpm increments.

Remember the dealer must enable this feature for it to work and many do not understane that it is already there on the newer trucks, just needs to be enabled. That is where the TSB confuses the service writers at the dealer. The TSB only lists trucks below 2004 for the flash, and it dosen't require a flash, just an tech that understands how to enable it.

The TSB allows a reprogram of the older trucks that do not already have this feature in the ECM.

Hope this makes sense....If you do a search you will find many similual posts, including one of mine asking the same question.

Good luck....Don

So, in the newer models if its just that the feature needs to be enabled does anyone have the low down on how to enable the feature without reflashing? Inquiring minds want to know.

You have to take it to a dealer. It is enabled using their scanning tool.

It really is unfortunate that so many dealers don't seem to know how to enable this feature. I went back to the dealer where I bought my truck for my first oil change and asked to have it enabled. The service writer told me it no longer worked on 05's, when I mentioned it was in the owners manual she said it was a "typo"

Going to try a different dealer for my next oil change.

it took two trips to my dealer, along with me bringing the procedure that i printed off of geno's garage website for them to figure it out and enable it. i suggest you do the same-bring the "tsb procedure" with you to your dealer!

Option

I believe 04.5 and up have it in the computer already. Anything earlier than this needed to be reflashed, then enabled. If you have a 04.5 or after all they have to do is enable it.

Gone are the days that the dealers knew the ins and outs of a car. now they just go as they go. It really sucks that I know more than the dealer does. I broke the handle off the brake unit and walked in with it in my hand, and they asked how I got it off. I'm like I took a bit and unscrewed it. There like well there special bits, only mechanics have them, i said point being. They gave me the part and I put it on myself. There just not like they used to be.

Thanks to DTR I can work on this cummins all by myself (could work on anything, just new to diesel motors) I got my high idle enabled and I'm loving it. No more excessive idle time excuse for me when my injecters go (here's hoping they don't)

Go here and print out this TSB:

http://www.dodgeram.info/tsb/2004/18-004-04.htm

It's the re-flash that allows you to control the idle speed via the cruise control buttons.

It works great.

After you print it take it to the dealer and give it to the service dept.

Tell them you want this specific upgrade. If they can't do it just take it to another dealer but I haven't heard any dealer refusing to do it.

That's all I did and it took them all of ten minutes to get it done.

DT.

....if you are that good you'll easily pull over 100k a year at some dealerships. Food for thought......

I went to the dealer for my last free oil change, and ask about this option. They had one (and only one) tech who seemed to know what he was doing. He said he didn't know until he tried it.
Came back and said, "Sorry, but it can't be done to your truck, since it doesn't have auto trans".
Something different about the ECM between the auto loader and manual.

There was no charge for the re-flash.

And yes it's only available for auto-trans and I believe the reason is that auto's have a "Park" gear and manuals don't.

For safety they want this feature operating only in Park. If you hit the brakes or take it out of park (or shut off the cruise control...) it shuts off.

It is a feature that allows you to idle the truck up to 1000 to 1400 rpm at will. At regular idle, diesels run very cool. In some situations, you could have incomplete combustion due to cool internal temps if you leave it idling for extended periods of time. This allows it to run warmer. It will make you heater warm up more quickly in cool weather, and it will make the A/C run cooler in hot weather.
