Thumbs up Ok -why should I

Get an 06 CTD to replace my 03 Duramax..? 06 has 18k on her and is a 1 ton dually - something I've been thinking about getting for hauling.. or upgrade my 03 with 62k on her to have 1 ton springs or bags..? 06 is 33k..

Thoughts would be appreciated.

Ok let me be the first drum roll please......................

Because it's a CTD.

I'm sure more of the more knwolegeable people will chime in to give you a better answer, but really i got rid of my 06 DRW 3500. No problems with it great truck, just didn't need it (DRW) anymore.

Plus as someone will more than likely say you'll get to try a Smarty.

Is the 06 an auto? If it is, then I would probably stay with the Duramax, and just do some upgrades.

It is auto but the long bed and dually is nice.. You can upgrade the tranny though.. I mean - I know that dodge had a bunch of issues with the 46RE but isn't the 06 different..? doesn't have a different tranny..?

Keep the Duramax and your 33K!

There's nothing wrong either truck, unless of course there's something wrong with your truck.

The newer trucks have the 48re. I'm not sure which years but I believe part of 03 to 07's that are 5.9's. The new 6.7 has the 6spd Auto. I don't think the trannies are the weak link. They hold up well under the stock hp/tq. It is the converter that is the week link and usually causes the problems.

I think just the cab and chasis models get the new auto. I believe that 06 will have the 48re. I agree with HOV keep the Duramax, maybe put some money into it and keep the rest!

Thanks for all the replies.. You say keep my truck.. Any specific reason? I mean - The 1 ton dually can payload a lot more than mine... I have a 5er now and I'm thinking of a camper. Payload on mine (and short box) is going to limit my choices.. I'm trying to decide - keep mine and upgrade suspension then go with a smaller camper - or get the long box Dually and get a bigger camper. Upgrade = $$$ New truck = Finance..

Seems to me from your replies that you want to get a new truck. If that is the case get the Dodge dually. I switched from GM to Dodge in 97. On my 4th CTD (and the one I will keep), everytime I ride in a Dmax, I think these seats are great. I like the seats in my wifes Yukon. I do not like the seats in my 06. I love the CTD and the towing performance, great engine and I like the 6 SPD. As has been saidin the previous responses, with the price of fuel, one may be better of staying with your D max.

I'd keep the Duramax, and your money. I know guy that has a 2500 Dura.,and he's added bags, and a couple mods, and he pulls a huge Titanium 5er no problem. You just might want a different truck though, that's the way it sounds.

You could buy it for the same reason I bought mine. I wanted a Cummins, I wanted a Dodge, I wanted solid axle front end and manual 4x4 shifter. Oh, and diesel used to be cheaper.

I love my truck and really - the only reason is the payload.. If they had a 1 ton Duramax in there for the same deal I wouldn't hesitate.. It's not towing that's the issue - it's a camper in the bed. What are you guys getting in mpg then..? Seem you'all think the Dmax is better than the CTD..

Thanks again

Wouldn't a dually be more stable then a SRW with heavier springs & air bags. The extra set of tires has to be better with crosswinds and road handling. I would go with the dually especially if towing a lot. My boat is somewhere around #6500 and I had a 1500 Suburban which towed fine. But now with the Ram with 3/4 ton and stiffer suspension, it's very stable wind & semi trucks are not even noticable. I enjoy towing the boat as much as boating itself. I thought the Cummins would be better on fuel also. It's better to have too much truck in my opinion. Empty I can crowd 18 mpg (@70 mph) around 14 mpg in the city, my 2 year avg. mpg=15.5

To specifically answer your question: 'why SHOULD you' get the 06 dually -

- because it has a CTD
- because duallies are cool
- because you can never have too much truck
- because it sounds like you want it
- because it sounds like you may need it if hauling large camper
- because it's still under warranty

you didn't ask why you SHOULDN'T get the 06 but I'll answer anyway, because you could get a brand new 08 for 36-37k.
