No Wait to Start light
No Wait to Start light
I bought an 06 Quad Cab 4x4 yesterday and love it but have not seen the "wait to start" light illuminate yet. I thought it didn't light yesterday when I took delivery because the engine was warm but today, first thing in the morning, still no light. Is it just a bulb or maybe the whole cluster? Something else?
The way my 2005 works, is the wait to start light comes on for a few seconds, along with a lot of other dash lights when you first turn the key to 'on' and it does a self check. If it's warm enough, either because the outside temps are high or it's just been run and is still warm, the w-t-s light goes out when all the other lights on the dash go out. If it's cold outside, then the w-t-s light stays on while the grid heaters warm up.
Are you saying your w-t-s light NEVER comes on, even during the self check part? That doesn't sound like its working right, based on how the 2005 works.

I live in Florida and my wait to start light came on once when I first got it...high 40's at night. But since it has been warm, I don't see it at all anymore. It does not go through a light check when initially turning the key on.
Don't worry, your truck is normal.
Can someone with a 2006 truck check the owner' manual and see if they've changed the description of how this light is supposed work. My 2005 manual describes it in two places:
(page 167, Instrument Cluster Description)
19. Wait to Start Indicator
The Wait to Start Indicator will illuminate when the ignition key is first turned to the ON positions. Wait until the Wait to Start Indicator turns OFF then start the vehicle.
(page 225 Starting Procedure)
3. Turn the ignition key to the ON position and look at the instrument panel cluster lamps. The lamps in the instrument panel cluster will illuminate when the ignition key is first turned to the ON position. This is a bulb check programmed to last for approximately 3 seconds. After the bulb check is completed, the Malfunction Indicator Light and Brake Warning llight will remain on. After the bulb check is complet and the WAIT TO START indicator goes out proceed to step 4.
If Dodge has changed the description for the 2006, that would be a positive sign that they really have made a change to the design. My 2005 works just like it is described, so you always have to wait to start for those 3 seconds, even if the engine is hot (assuming you follow the directions). Maybe they changed it so if it's hot the Wait To Start stays off so you can go directly to starting?

on all 06 trucks except for GOTMEAT's truck, the light only comes on when the IAT is below 68 degrees. when it drops below 68 degrees the light will come on. if the truck is still warm it does not come on.
yes they changed it from the 03-05 trucks. The light on the 03-05 trucks was useless to turn on when the truck was warm.

This winter mine would come on when I left work....Since it has started warming up her now (70deg) I jump in and go...no wait at all! No light even during check. I think yours is normal. It fooled me for awile. I'm still trying to get used to it...I'm so trained I'll get in my wifes Durango turn the key and space for awile waiting for the grid heater to do it's thing. Old habits!
I've only seen my light 3 times. in 3k. It's not been that warm here either. This week we had some 45 degree days where the truck sat out all day at work. When I hopped in 8 hours later to head home, no light..... I've thought that was a little odd, but maybe it's normal.....
My 04 came on all the time.

Friend of mine has an 06 and his w-t-s light has only come on 2-3 times since he has gotten it. I gues it's pretty much normal in the new batch of trucks. Besides it only warms the air coming into the engine, it's not like to old style glow plugs they use to use.

We are talking about the little red light in the lower right of the gauge cluster right. I could be wrong in assuming that is the light that we are talking about. I thought that was it.
Look in your user manual at the instrument cluster. The wait to start illuminates yellowish/orange and it looks kinda' like two cursive L's -- apparently it's the "international symbol" for "Diesel Preheat" according to the service manual.

EDIT -- Upside down L's that is....
