Well I just bought new Nitto Terra Grappler tires in 285/75/17 and love them so far. A little dissappointed in the load rating, but they don't seem to have any problem carrying what im pulling. Very quiet on the road and good traction in the rain....and I love the new size coming down from 35''s.

But I just noticed Nitto Tire has a new tire coming out. Looks like a cross between the Terra and the Mud terrain.........called Trail Grappler. http://www.nittotire.com/#index%2Etire%2Etrailgrappler Pretty sweet. For those of you in the market for a new aggressive tread, this might be one to consider.

Hey Robert,

Speaking of unusual load ratings, Toyo just came out with the Toyo Open Country HT (highway tire) in 285/70/17. Load range E/10 but it's rating is 121 and 3195 lbs @ 80 psi. Go figure.....

I know it's kinda crazy how they come up with these ratings. I was looking at the dura grappler for a while and wrongly assumed that the Terra Grappler was the same load rating for the same size...just a different slightly more aggressive tread. I was wrong. But the TG is an "E" rated 80psi tire. So go figure.

Mike,,,,we are having a DTR #8 gtg at my house on Aug 8th if you want to come up. It's a little bit of a drive, but you can stay overnight and head back Sunday if you come.

Back to the tires. My hunch is they (tire manufacturers) maybe doing it for liability reasons.

But why the inconsistency? What is so different that would allow a Dura Grappler 285/75/17 E rated 80 psi tire have a 3900+ weight rating and a Terra Grappler of the same size and rating only be 3195?

Why not just rate them all low? Or rate them all high?

Toyo 285-75-17 AT's are rated something like 600# higher than their MT counterpart.

Which brings up another question. Are Nitto and Toyo the same co? I think I heard Nitto was owned by Toyo somewhere.


Those Trail Grappler I linked to above, look alot like Toyo MTs.

Will that 295/70R17 tire fit my stock height suspension without rubbing something? I thought I heard that 285/70R17 is the biggest you can put on and clear a stock setup. What says the DTR crowd? Thanks for the 411. Shima

Should be able to run up to a 305/70/17 on the stock suspension (and rims) without rubbing. Plenty of clearance with the 285's.

The 35"x12.50"x17" are E rated! So even if they are the same price as the Toyo MT's you shoulde be able to order them from discount tire direct and get free shipping! Discount tire doesn't carry Toyo! but they do have Nitto!

I wished I had seen these tires a week ago, I would have waited till September to get tires. Instead I just bought 5 Toyo OC AT in the 285/75R17E. Oh well maybe next set.
