New BFG AT 305/65-17E - anyone tried it?

My local [Discount] Americas Tire said they carry them but don't have them in stock yet. I was curious if anyone had tried this size and was there any issue with rubbing? I'm thinking they should fit fine, since it's the same height as a 285/70, just wider. I've been waiting for an E rated tire with a bigger footprint, so I might just have to order them and see what happens.

The tire you are talking about is load range E, but it has the same load rating as the 285X70X17D BFG A/T - 3195#. I am in the same boat as you. I have also thought about this size, but see no real advantage in higher load carring capacity - just a little wider than the 285's. You may think about the 295 Toyo M/T in a E. I think load carring capacity is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3650#.

I had the same concern as you so I emailed BFG. They indicated that all tires over 295mm width are 65PSI max, which is why they have the lower load rating. I figured my last truck did fine on the 265/70 D-rated tires, these should be fine... they must be built with better sidewalls to be considered E-rated, and since they're a lower profile ratio, they should be plenty stable towing. I'm guessing the lower pressure requirement is so they don't balloon and wear out in the middle of the tread. I decided to order them today so I'll let you know how it goes sometime after they're installed on Friday. I'm planning to get some miles on them in the ice/snow this weekend... should be a night/day difference over these OEM slicks.

If you don't mind me asking, about what are they going to run you after mount and balance?

Please keep us updated after you have them installed. I am going back and forth on the tire issue. I have had very good luck over the past 10 plus years with BFG tires (AT's and MT's). I found some nice KMC XD wheels that I am going to purchase - now just trying to figure out what tire to wrap around them! The more tire choices we have the harder it gets. I would almost rather go out and buy a new truck, but then I would still have the somewhat small 265's and a new truck!

FYI... called a LOT of places, but I like to use Americas Tire (Discount Tire) because of their road hazard warranty... I tend to be hard on my tires! They wanted $271+tax per tire... $1404 OTD. I found 4WD.COM is having a sale, $231 plus $75 instant rebate with 4... and the kicker.. FREE SHIPPING! AMT matched the deal so it saved me about $250 without the mail order hassle.

I'm with you there! I've been contemplating tires for the past 2-3 months. I've researched every single AT/MT that will fit my truck. I really wanted the GY MTR's, but they just don't have enough siping for the snow/ice. I was almost decided on the Nitto TerraGrapplers but after seeing them in person, I couldn't stand the way the fake sidewall lugs don't even line up with the tread, and they're just too tame looking. The MudGrapplers looked pretty good, with more siping for a mud tire, but the price is nuts. The Toyo AT's just look to tame for me and their MT's are too much $$. The Cooper offerings aren't bad but at about the same price as BFG's I'd rather stick with what I know. I really like the Procomp Xterrain, but longevity is an issue. I guess I was just tired of BFG's and wanted something new, but I really think they hit the nail on the head for a great all-around tire. Plus, I want a tire that's available when I ruin one and BFG's are just about everywhere.
