Mystery hole in dash?

There's a square hole in the dash of my 2006 manual 3500. It's hidden from view, sort of "under" the cigarette lighter. If you reach up to feel the top of that cutout area behind the sticks, you can feel a roughly 2x2 inch hole.

Anyone know why it's there? I used it to run the wiring for my brake controller, which eliminated the need to cut any holes. But it's weird to have a hole there like that.

If we're talking about the same hole, mine has that also. I have an auto tranny, but the console is probably about the same. I also used that hole to run the wiring from my brake controller, it was convenient for that. As for why it's there....I have no idea, but I sure put it to good use.

that hole is a light and it turns on when your headlights turn on if we are talkin about the same hole.. because i was going to run some wires through there too.. but it might be different..

Mine has the same hole, sorta up under the lighter off to the pass side a bit.
I was thinking of mounting some sorta dim light there to make my cup holder easier to find in the dark.

BTW, a friend of mine has a GM, they have way more interior lights, under the dash by your feet, in the doors etc.
Anyone added more lights to theirs? Some under the corners of the dash would be nice...¿

its so u can pull off that piece of plastic once u get all the screws out. it has to be pulled down , so i guess the hole is there so you can get hold of it. i just pulled mine off , so i drill my hole for my switch on my xzillarader. ill take some pics when done.
