my take on the 06 "MPG" flashes

i have an 06 that was built in september 2005. before they updated my PCM with the most recent update, my overhead would read 1-2 MPG under hand calculated. 7 tanks after having the flash done, my overhead now reads 0.5-1 above hand calculated. my 7 tanks before and 7 tanks after are very consistant hand calculated. i wonder if people seeing the MPG increase are only seeing it in the overhead? that's the way mine is.

i've been getting around 15 MPG local driving since day 1 and haven't seen any increase. i have under 5000 miles on my truck. i'm be pulling my travel trailer about 1000 miles soon so that should help break her in.

My truck was built in Nov 05 and I’ve been thinking of having it reflashed when I get the ABS module recall done. So far, I’m getting around 17 MPG both hand calc and on the overhead (only have about 2700 miles of mixed driving so far with only a few hundred towing). I do have a hard time starting it when hot at times, maybe it will cure that.

I wish I knew how you guys all get these great MPG numbers. I have tracked since day 1 and I get average of 13 mpg. This is hand calc. I havve vent kit mod so I kno I am filling the same every time. The last tank, I tried hard. No towing, never over 70, blah blah blah and got almost got 14 mpg.

I will try the flash. I would be super happy with just 15 mpg.

Kind of a mystery isn’t it? I feel like you do except I don’t understand how other trucks are getting 20+ MPG…..lol. Guess I should be happy with 17! Is yours an auto or 6 speed? I would get the flash for sure if I only got 13 MPG, maybe I should leave well enuf alone?

Auto, 4x4. I tow a 10,000 lb race trailer and a boat around every now and then. On those tanks, I'll get around 12mpg. close to 14mpg when don't tow... I know it's a big truck, but I want the same mileage similar vehicles get. 15mpg and I wouldn't complain anymore. 17mpg and I would be stoked.

I've commented here on this precise behavior before...

My overhead behaved EXACTLY as you describe. My 3500 was built in June 2005, very early in the 2006 model year, so my firmware was quite dated. My overhead read below hand-calc every single time. Then the dealer reflashed with TSB 18-05-06 and two things happened: 1) The overhead started reading ~0.7 MPG higher than reality, and 2) my actual hand-calc'd MPG increased by ~0.5-1.5 MPG.

As noted in my sig, I'm now getting 18+ MPG in mixed driving. This is honest, hand-calc'd MPG while spending 15-20 minutes filling up to make absolutely sure I top off the tank the same way every single time. My MPG figures steadily increased for the first 5000-ish miles and now at ~7500 it's leveled off in the 18-19 MPG range. Since the 1993 Pathfinder it replaced never got better than 17 MPG its whole life, I'm delighted!

I guesss before this gets out of hand I should also state that my Grandmother drove faster than I do......I shift at 2K and drive at approx 60-65 MPH at the most.....keeping the truck in the sweet spot of 1900-2100RPM's if you drive like a Nascar driver your milage will never be good....on a stock truck at least

my truck was built 03/06 and when i first got it my overhead read 2 mpg higher than hand calc, now with only 8000 miles on the clock, my overhead reads 0.2-0.5 lower than hand calc....helps that my mileage has come up 2.5 mpg since i got it...LOL

Just had the latest reflash done on my early 06 as well, and mileage has gone up a bit since. Both hand and overhead computer. I had a reflash done about 3 months ago and that one really increased the mileage, as i was about to take the truck back and ask for my money back as i was getting 13 on a good day. Now i get 16-17 regularly mixed driving, happy with that. However neither reflash has solved the incosistent warm/cold starting issue, don't waste your time if that is all you are trying to solve. They have not figured out how to fix it yet obviously.

So how does getin the "NEW" flash process go? Do I just walk up to the service counter at the *********** and ask for the newest flash?

Need to run the hand calculations on mine. I've checked running easy and hard with the overhead. Went on a float trip this past weekend and half the time was driven at 63mph and the other half was driven at 78 mph. Overhead said 21.3 @ 63 mph and 17.2 @ 78 mph - both with crusie set. Not sure exactly when my truck was built. Can I find that on the window sticker? Only have about 3600 miles on the truck but have owned it since March 10th.

Price dog,

Open the drivers door and look at the sticker there. You will find the build date.
