My OBA & Airhorn Setup

It's mostly done.....kinda
I haven't been posting over here that often and while I was lurking I ended up asking a question. Then I updated my signature. And decided what the heck I'll let you guys pick my OBA apart! Still lots of things I'd like to do with it, but it's good enough for now.

http://s220.photobucket.com/albums/d...view=slideshow

Questions, comments or you just want to make fun of it let 'er rip.

I'll throw a few things out there now
2-Viair 480C compressor's

2-8 gallon tanks w/quick disconnects

Pretty much mounted everything erector set style utilizing uni-strut

IIRC the horns are a 30" Grover and a 24" Hadley

The push-pull on the shifter blows the horns (yes I need to paint it)

I got most of the stuff from a Freightliner surplus yard that is now closed. Soon to be joining it's closing is the truck plant up here. Thank to outsourcing. And we the consumers who are all about the lowest pricing even if it screws up our economy. But, I shouldn't have said any of that. It's a completely different topic and I don't want to derail my own thread.......Sorry I mentioned it

A gold star if you can tell where the fake grommets for the 00 wire came from
Huh? I'm trying to add this last image to the slide show, but can't figure it out. Anybody know how?

Bicycle/motorcycle hand grips? Grab a couple cheap tennis ***** and cover the quick connects to keep the crud out.

Looks real good Sandaholic but aren't the horns a little loud right behind the cab?

You know it's funny they are not bad at all, inside the cab. Standing outside next to the truck, they will flat out make you As my little girl has found out One of these days I'd like to grab a few more. Maybe add some actual train horns and get those mounted underneath the truck. Just outside the frame under the doors. These are really only to get the attention of the moron's who find it necessary to cut me off. And they will. My buddies say they are louder than what is on most semi's even partially enclosed as they are.

I'm actually looking for an engine driven compressor for my '08 so I can put a Nathan AirChime K3L or K3LA on my truck.

I had the same problem as you. I was towing my 26 foot toyhauler/RV and some jerk wad cut me off because they almost missed their exit. And I almost has a new hood ornament. I don't know why this guy did it, because I was doing the speed limit and he sped up to pass me so I know it was hard to miss the size of my truck and trailer. So after I swallowed my heart to get it back into my chest, I made the decision to install as big a horn as possible.

Some people really don't need to breed, much less drive.

Nice job Sandaholic, another little tip; put a little toctite or nylock nuts on the Unitstrut pipe clamp screws. I have used them on a truck in the past and they vibrate loose.

The frame of the truck and the box actually twist a LOT when you really torque on the throttle. Some of those hard lines may have problems down the road.

Get some male quick connects and put plugs in them and then put them in the feamale quick connects coming off your tank. This will keep dirt from getting into them and causing them to jam.

Give your ram some horns

Yeah they are spendy. If a guy fabbed everything himself it could be done very reasonably, but that isn't gonna happen for most of us. I'd like to have more CFM, but it isn't necessary. This setup does what I need it to do.

Thanks Bud!
Which clamps are you talking about? The ones holding the pipes and horns have ny-lock nuts on them.......and they ain't comin' off! The big clamps securing the tanks are double nutted (nutted?, nut'd) have 2 nuts on them. And those ain't coming off either

Looks like you beat me to it. (nutted, nut'd, nutd....) I wish I had a double nut
How much CFM do you get out of the two compressors, enough for air suspension? I want to do the horns and later suspension but only want to do the air system once. It would be nice to be able to fill a tire in less than a day too.
The braided SS hose looks great and should hold up well. That is one of my for sure parts. I work in heavy industry and will use those fittings and parts to make the system last.
Again good job and good luck.

For the suspension you don't need much at all, CFM is almost a non-issue, air horns require a lot more. Unless you are doing a lot of things at once a single compressor (better one) is way more than sufficient. For sure you want 100% duty cycle and I wouldn't want anything less than 150 psi. Look at the Air Zenith OB2 or ExtremeAir compressors if you would rather have just one compressor. FYI those 480c's are 50% duty cycle at 200 psi, the OB2 is 100% at 200 psi.

I did mine redneck cheap. . being a broke college student i had to be resourceful.

Got the air horns for free, not sure what they are. two trumpets with one base. had a 30 gal or so air compressor with a bad motor, so it stays ratchet strapped in the bed. bought some regular ol air tool 3/8 air line, ran it thru the frame to front and plumbed it thru a NC air valve. then to the trumpets in the bumper. wired the air valve into the factory horn button. so it works with the alarm and such. .

when i get low on air I fill it at the local truck stop.

here's a video.

Sandaholic, you should post a vid of the tone of yours I am curious. mine are a little bit high pitched but the point does still get across.

You know, I never noticed it was 50% @ 200psi and 100% @100psi. I think I just paid attention to the 100% @ 100psi..........I know there's a saying that would fit here, but it just won't come to me

How much CFM do you get out of the two compressors Specs say they will move 3.53 CFM at 0PSI and they drop quickly from there., enough for air suspension? I want to do the horns and later suspension but only want to do the air system once. It would be nice to be able to fill a tire in less than a day too.
The braided SS hose looks great and should hold up well. That is one of my for sure parts. I work in heavy industry and will use those fittings and parts to make the system last. Those compressors came with the braided hose installed already. They also have little check valves in the ends.
Again good job and good luck. Thanks
Like MrLuckey said you don't need alot of air to run some bags. As for fill rates, I tested that out at the sand dunes. I takes me roughly 2.5 minutes to take each tire from 60ish to 15lbs. Tires are 37/12.5R17 GoodyearMTR's. They measure out to 36/12R17 they are still good sized. I can air them back up in about 11 minutes. First tire 2 min. 2nd 2.5 3rd 3 4th 3.5 roughly. Might be a hair quicker. By the 4th tire I think I am down to around 80-90 PSI. That's pretty much the same as using my crafstman air compressor or using the air at a service station. One of these days I am going to put together a manifold with 4 lines off of it so I can air up all 4 tires at the same time. Anyhow, it's definitely not an all day deal. And I was thinking recently, that if I had closed off one of the air tanks it might fill a tad faster. I may do that next time just to see.

The setup fills my tires and runs my 1/2 impact and was probably the most inexpensive way to get what I wanted. Besides a york compressor in the engine bay. I wanted to save room in there for future mods.

Only a grand? That's better than VMAC wants for their system. I sent them an e-mail and it starts around $10,300 for their setup

And yes, that's right. They want 10 grand. I'm sure I won't be the only one that did a double take on the price tag.

I'm hoping Kilby can get one put together. They have them up to the '06, so I guess I'm just waiting.

When you listen to that do they sound the same to you? It's hard to tell if any of that is some sort of audio distortion? I can say that my horns sound nothing like that.......at all. They sound just like a semi. We were at the Sublimity Harvest Festival watching some sled-pulls recently. As a few semi's were leaving the grounds they were all blowing their horns. I asked my buddies if my horns sounded like that, they said they were louder. Louder or not they seem to have the same tone.
I will get a video up at some point.
