Unhappy mpg on new

Here is my experience on mpg on my new '06 CTD quad cab:

It now has 1050 miles and up to the first 800 miles none were under tow. The past 350 miles have been under load and I will continue to break it in towing at least 80%-90% of the time with my RV (8000#). Anyway, I am getting an average of 10-12 mpg with no load and 8-10 mpg towing . I keep it at 55-60 mph towing and 60-70 mph no load. I check my mpg between fill up with a calculator, as the overhead readout only gives an average trip mpg - which, by the way someone needs to tell Dodge the overhead readout on previous models was MUCH better where it gave the instant mpg, as well as average mpg. This overhead only does a trip average and takes a long time after reset to give an average mpg - useless.

I asked my service manager about this mpg and he said not to be concerned until after 5K miles or so and said around 15K it should be much better and level off. Is he right?

Yes, it takes a long time to break in these engines. Usually the best gains are seen after 10k to 20k miles.

Mine is a daily driver/weekend warrior.

I've had it since 3/23 & have 2400 miles on it. ~1200 towing/freeway. On the weekends, I've been out fishing and/or towing something.

Around town, I am getting about 14. The latest tank looks really good (at 14) & will find out tonight, when I fill it.

Towing 3-6k, through the hills, I am getting 12.5-12.75.

Mileage seems to be picking up; I'll see how this weekend turns out. I've got ~400 mile rt fishing trip, towing my buddies boat that weighs ~4500lb.

20,000 mile break in period is totally normal. Mileage increases should be steady throughout break in.
Cheers
Mike

Could you also be burning winterized fuel?? That fuel has a lower Cetane rating and when the summer fuel comes out, you should see an increase upto 20%. But then you start using the airconditioner and that drops your mileage even more.

Try some Diesel Kleen. I put about 9 ounces per 30 gal tankful and I usually get about 3 MPG increase per tank. The engine runs quieter and smoother. Give it a try, you can find it at WalMart in the automotive section. I buy the 96 ounce bottle for $12.99. I figure with the increase in mileage and diesel reaching close to $3.00 per gallon, a 10% increase in mileage would pay for the Diesel Kleen three times over. I see an average of 10-20% increase using it at every fillup.

I wouldn't still have my truck if it got anywhere near that mileage. I only have 17k on my truck now, but I haven't noticed any change in mileage from when it was new. Unloaded highway my truck will and always has done about 17-22 mpg running 80-55 mph; A whole lot less in town and 15.4 mpg overall.

Your mileage should be a lot better, a Hemi or V10 could do better. Find out what is wrong, either your truck or calculator is broken.
