Any thoughts on the difference between the 285/75R17 and the 35x12.50R17? I was ready to pull the trigger on the 35's but noticed the 285/75's are almost as tall (34.1in v. 34.8in) but about 1.6in narrower and 12lbs lighter. So, do you think there would be less of a loss in MPG and less wear on the front end going w/ the 285/75's? Anyone ever seen these two tires side by side, how much smaller do the 285's look?

Obviously a tire that is shorter and weighs less will get better MPGs.

The 285s side-by-side a 35 x 12.50 tire is much smaller....

 

Have to disagree with that. A 285/70/17 yes but not a 285/75/17, the 35 is a little more than a 1/2 inch in height. Also depends on the width of the rim. I have the Toyo AT's, I think they measure 33.8 and it's a pretty good size tire.

 

Off topic,but I wish I'd ordered that color on my truck. It doesn't show scratches nor burn you up in the sun. My buddy's got your identical tires,but in my judgement they appear quite a bit smaller than his prior 35's.

 

I'm sure there would be a mileage increase running the 285's but I would imagine it would be minimal.

If you have any type of leveling kit or suspension kit I would think the bigger and wider 35's would look better.

Surprisingly no,just keep the rotated at every 5k.

 

I have 35" Toyo MT's and considered getting the 285/75/17(34.1") when it was time to replace them recently. I had my tire guy get a set out to the shop and we sat one in front of a new set of Toyo 35's and they were just noticeably smaller everywhere, height and width. Then we sat one in front of the 35's mounted on my truck and to be honest, they looked very wimpy compared to the 35's. I'd never get them!

 

Quietest MT I've ever ran into. Not much louder than most 35" AT's.

Looking into some as we speak. The narrower tire should be a little bit better on ice also right? More pounds/square inch on the contact patch?

Thats not too bad. Not much more than the BFG's are going for now. I may have to try a set out. How many miles are you guys getting out of yours? I have over 50k on my current set of BFG's and would hate to spend $300 per tire on something that doesn't last. Thanks guys and sorry for hijacking your thread!

Are you running the BFB ATs? You won't get near the mileage out of these that you'll get out of any AT, as you'd probably expect. I haven't gone through a set yet, but have asked the same question. I got answers all over the board but the general consensus seemed to be a function of several things: 1. How do you drive? 2. Where do you drive? 3. Do you tow a lot? 4. Rotate every 6,000.

The guys who don't smoke their tires, drive a little off road and a little on road and don't tow a lot seemed to be getting the best mileage (up to around 40K) and the guys who towed heavy a lot seemed to be getting the worst mileage (<20,000). Obviously smoking the tires and driving aggressively will cut the life down significantly too. The are a well made tire, though, and if taken care of properly (rotate often and keep inflated) I think they'll last as long if not longer than most all of the MTs out there.
