Mirror problem?

I caught a small tree backing up today and it folded my tow mirror towards the hood and now it doesnt lock in place. When you push or pull your mirror in it rises up at the rotating joint and the pops back down when the mirror is tucked in and it locks it there and same thing when you push it back out it pops up till its fully extended and then pops back in, and locks it in position so wind doesnt move it. Well when mine hit the tree it popped up and now its stuck up in the free movement position. I cant figure how to get it to pop back down and lock. Right now the mirror will move in from the wind if you go over 60mph. I tried pounding it down, every combination of pushing pulling and turning it at the same time, nothing. I even popped the plastic off and still cant figure it out at all. Any one have this happen before and know how to fix it? Im stumped and i have no luck with mirrors on my trucks, Ive broken atleast one on every truck i own and some more than one.

When you do that, catch a tree on backup, the locking mechanism breaks. The only way to fix it and keep full function is to replace the entire assembly. If you don't care about the folding function duct tape or a screw comes to mind :-). You can find replacements on ebay $75-$125 or so.
