Mileage and the 06 Ram 2500 Laramie Mega Cab

I have to say, I test drove the truck and it drove like a dream. It really did. I loved every minute of it, it was great on the freeway, I liked how it felt, handled, and turned. At one point, I was on a steep icy hill and stopped, then punched it and got up the hill as if I'd never stopped.

Anyhow, I asked the dealer what the MPG was for an automatic and the answer I got was "the EPA doesn't require us to have that info because it's a diesel." He then switched topics. When I pushed him, he said he didn't know. I believe him - the kid can't be older than 23 and has only been at the dealership for 2 months.

Anyone driving that truck out there? Do you love it? I am really keen on it, but would like to know what to expect mileage-wise (my wife has been pushing me towars a *shiver* silverado 2500 b/c her bro in law has one that gets 22 mpg, but I tell her we don't get a big truck solely based on mpg). Are there other things that have been positive about the truck or that you wish you knew before buying it? Let me know... I'd appreciate it. This may be our first diesel truck for towing our really light hybrit travel trailer and eventually a heavier tt or 5er.

Well I can't answer for the Mega cab but I can answer for the Duramax. My 05 CC 4x4 is getting on a good tank will little stop and go traffic is only getting 14-15 pulling I see 9-10. That is only running around 70 mph. Now I had an 03 Dodge 4x4 6 speed it got around 19-20 uloaded highway and pulling I got around 12 regardless of what I was pulling. I am currently considering switching teams again .

I picked up my mega cab last friday and mine is a 2500 4x2 and I am getting around 14 in town. I only have a few hundred miles on it and also mine has the 4.10 gears and 285 tires.
It drives very smooth compared to the 03 I had.

Does the 4.10 gears and 285 tires impact the mileage, or does the 2500 just get bad gas mileage?

Give it a little time it doesn't sound like any of these trucks have many miles on them. My truck is showing 14 in town don't know about highway haven't had it out yet. I only have 400 miles on mine so I can't give a accurate calculation.....but from everything I have read they need 15-20k to open up and get the mileage.

I understand. DW isn't too keen on me buying a new truck that will only average 13-16, which is what one of her uncles told her to expect from the new Laramie Mega Cab diesels. We were thinking of getting one before Christmas, until that conversation. Now she has me back on the mission to get a ... better idea of what the mileage will be.

That said, the dealer can tell me anything - they can say I can expect 25mpg, and since they don't have to post diesel mpg, all I can do is smile and nod. I figured it would be 18ish for the first 20-25g, but hope its a little more. Much of mine would be freeway miles as I go 150 miles back and forth a couple of times a week.

Thanks!

I think you would get better mileage if you had the 3.73 gears but my final drive with the bigger tires is 3.96 and that is good for me while I tow my TT.
And I am sure once it gets broke in mileage will increase.
