A little MPG info
Just for those that might like to know. I was helping a buddy do a little Hot Shot hauling this week end. He has a 2001 Ford Dually that has 3.73's in it and an auto. I had my Dually listed below.
We made a 1,200 round trip. On the way back I was pulling a 8.5x22 enclosed trailer and he was pulling a 8.5x16 enclosed. He runs an extra 90 gallon tanks so we were never really able to compare milage until the way back. We both filled up at the some time and ran 324 miles right together and stoped and filled again. I took 29.5 gallon and he took 28 gallons. So I got 10.98 mpg and he got 11.57 mpg.
This is much closer then I thought it would be with me running the 4.10's and pulling a little larger trailer. I was getting on it pretty hard through Chicago catching up after getting block in by traffic or I could have probably saved 1/2 a gallon their. We were running around 74 mph most of the time. His truck has 290,000 on it and mine only 30,000 on it also, not even hardly broke in yet. I thought is was interesting.
On a side note on the way down I was pulling a 8x16 that probably weighed close to the same as the 8.5x22 because it had stuff inside. We only traveled 65-70 on the way down and I was getting 13-14 mpg. So that extra 5 mphs kills 2-3 mpg.

Mopar Mudder
I have a 3500 SRW 4.10 and see about 1 to 1.5 MPG more than my 200,000 mile 2500 Y2K that I had. I get from 10MPG running hard with tall load to 23.6MPG running 52MPH on the Natchez Trace unloaded. The wind resistance is the largest factor and the 3.54, 3.73, and the 4.10s all have similar wind resistance.

Re:A little MPG info
Wind resistance wasn't too much of a factor on this run, the trailers were barely above the cab of the truck. But you are right the wind plays a big factor in these things. When I get 2 lifted trucks up on top of my gooseneck it is like pulling a sail it's around 11' or so in the air and seems to be about as aerodynamic as a brick. (picture below)
I also have a 2000 3/4 ton with 4.10's and a 2001 3/4 ton with 3.55's, both are autos.
Empty the 3.55's will get 1-2 mpg more. Pulling heavy, like over 10,000# they get the same, on a light load the 3.55's will do 2-4 better.
