Listening to stereo with doors open and engine off

I did some searching and couldnt find any tricks to kill the door ajar dinger so I could rock out with my front doors open. By chance I was trying to fool my kenwood head unit to play movies with the parking brake off and discovered that if you remove a ground wire under the dash the dinger goes away. I have been running the truck for over a month now with no known problems. Please (pardon the pun) chime in if anyone has any info on this wire. Im going to try to descibe the wire location here. It is a black single wire with crimp on ring connector that is bolted to the side of truck right next to where the drivers left foot generally rests. You have to pull the kick plate or whatever you call the plastic trim piece down there to access it. Let me know if this works out for anyone. That dinger was drivin me nuts and I found a bunch of posts on ways to shut off differant chimes but not so you could listen to the radio with doors open. After slamming the door shut with the latch closed manually I abandoned that method.

I slammed the **** door shut on the closed latch myself. I think I even did it twice in a row before I figured out why it wouldn't shut!!

Yeah my HU is a kenwood dnx 5120 and if I remember correctly there is a single, long, light green wire you run to ground and leave it. Its meant to hook to some parking break wiring. Do a google search for whatever HU you have and type "Bypass Mod" you should be set. Be sure to check with your state and local laws. Its a good thing I did. It gave me a chance to disconnect it before I was repremanded, ticketed, fined or imprisoned. Its a good thing we have lawmakers to regulate crimes as serious as this. Your tax dollars at work.

I'd like to find this out as well.

On pretty much all Fords there's a harness with a dozen or so wires that controls the dinger. Found out long ago the door/key in ignition (dinger) is the black/purple one. Pretty much all my friends Fords I've clipped the wire, which takes all of about 15 seconds to do. From the time you open the door and grab a wire snip and cut.

Can't imagine it's a whole lot more complicated on these Trucks?

Cal74 I explained as well as I could on the OP that you just find that black wire and diconnect it, or snip it whatever floats your boat. Could probably get it down to less than 15 seconds if ya did more than one. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes Im dying to get some feedback on this one. Good Luck I have yet to notice any problems since. Im still curious what the wire does besides make the dinger ding when the door is open and the key is in the ignition.

I'll look into it one of these days (thanks) I just speed read what you'd wrote when I saw mention of the DVD player.

My truck pretty much sits in the garage un-used in the winter. Pretty much only use it to haul my horse trailer. Have a daily driver car and an OLD Ford Ranger for an everyday 4x4 hunting/fishing truck.

Soooo, I found out that if you disconnect that black wire that all your accessories will stay on even after you turn off the key and open the door. That wire basically tells the truck to kill power to everything once the door is opened after the key is turned to the off position.

Hope this helps someone.

I think it kinda will be a negative in a way though. It's like having a constant draw on your electrical system, even the windows will roll down with the door open and key out of the ignition, so I would think that over time it would drain your batteries down, or shorten the life of them substantially. I dunno, maybe I'm wrong, and thinking way into it to far.

You could always run a hidden toggle switch to where if you wanted the radio and accessories on just flip the switch and break the ground, then you could have the best of both worlds.

Thats a hell of an idea there LJ. I like way you think. A problem SOLVER! Just a cheap flush mount switch in the plastic kicker plate or sidewall or whatever. Mabey a label that says RRDDO ( Rock n Roll Door Dinger Override) switch. or mabey one that says "Under absalutley no condition EVER toggle this switch" just to mess with people.

I am runnin platinum deep cycles so hopefully they hold up to the power cycle you descibe but you may have a valid issue with light plated starting batts and a truck that doesnt get driven much. I know It bonly took a couple of times running down my stockers and they were wasted.

I got the idea from my old truck, that is how I broke the ground for the DVD player to work all the time.

The Jeep is my baby, although I am getting ready to start building a full tube chassis "rock buggy" in a few months.
