Keys - programmed or not

I was told my 2005 Ram 3500 2WD needed a programmed key to start. Since they were expensive at the dealer I bought 2 on Ebay for $17.
Down to the keyshop I went and guess what. The key I am using on my truck is not chipped.
Did some of these 3500's not require a chipped key or did someone disable it somehow?

Rocky

My locksmith says the sentry key system is present on 2006 and later vehicles only.

My 05 has the chipped key. From what I understand if the working key is black, it is not chipped, if it is gray it is.

Well now I have a pair of programable key blanks; that was a waste of $17. The non-chipped key cost $1.89 to cut including the blank.

Think of it as this: Could've been $300, instead of $17, and to have the dealer make a key if you lock yours in the truck, is about $17.
