Jack and stand question
Jack and stand question
What should a jack be rated for to not have any worries when lifting the front of these trucks? Also are there anything about jack stands that need to be looked at or will the cheapos from Harbor Frieght do the job?

I have two 2 ton stands that I use but I also leave the floor jack under it as well.
Mine are not "Cheapos" but are not anything fancy either. All I can say is anything is better and safer than nothing at all.

Yea I would leave the jack under it as well, but I am just wanting to make sure that I do not waste my money on something that is going to collapse becasue it can not handle the wieght. I need something for when I install my lift and do other work. I dont only want a jack to be holding up the front end of my truck for several hours at a time.
Don't cheap out here. A good jack is going to cost you some money; don't be afraid to spend it. No need to get crazy, but expect to spend about $125-150'ish.
I just bought one from Northern Tools. Including shipping (it's very heavy), it was cheaper than buying local.

Says that thing is rated for 3tons? Only 99 bucks for the whole thing? Seems kinda low...

I have a pair of 6 ton jack stands and a pair of 3 ton, I only use the 6 ton for the truck, the 3 ton ones would need to be extended so far they're not as stable with the smaller foot print.
When I did the clutch I had the front axle on ramps, the rear on the 6 tons.

Hey Bansh-eman :
The front of my truck weighs in at 4400lbs. I would guess when you lift one corner, you are lifting maybe 3,000 pounds.
I have an old jack, maybe 25 years old, that I have lifted cars and my truck with and worked under them just being held by the jack. I never knew this was dangerous, but I guess sometimes jacks fail. Lucky for me, this old jack has never had a problem.
When I get a new one, I'm going to get a good one. I'd look for HD casters, powder coat finish, one piece handle, fast lift, smooth retract when loaded.... and a beer holder.

If your front axle weights 4400 pounds wouldn't lifting one side of the axle be 2200 pounds?
My friend is storing an aluminum floor jack at my place, looks nice but it's a piece of crap. I have an OTC floor jack, does the job....
Buying on line the shipping charges get pretty pricey, unless the warehouse is near where you live or something I guess.
The one posted above is $84 to ship to Lynden Wa.
