I contacted the Road Safety Division of the Canadian Transportation Board.

no I have do not have the hose... I used glade air f. sprayed into the front grill.... it is the air f. I smell within 2 sec. of spraying that I get... I just don't think it should do that...
I think the real fix is to have the correct rubber plugs/valve in place..... or is it they stop putting them in (makig them) ??? do the older trucks have this issue that have plugs ins in the cowling???

For you guys that are worried about Carbon Monoxide (CO), consider this. Diesel engines produce a very tiny amount of CO if any at all. CO is the reason that you should not run a gas engine in a confined space without proper ventilation. Running the gas enine in the confined space would kill you once the CO levels are high enough, you become incoherent, lose consiensness (<----spelling ?), then you end up dying from asphixiation. Running the diesel engine in the confined space would most likely not kill you, (unless you sat there long enough for the engine to consume all of the breathable Oxygen) you would probably be sick to your stomach.

Under the cowl there were three holes that needed to be taped and only one side of my cowl had a rubber flapper on it. I taped all the holes and frabricated the missing flapper The Parts guy said " it's a legitimate part number but it's not aviable to order" I think one of the pictures is clear enough to read the part number.
As far as I know none of the trucks have these hole plugged I'm guessing engineering missed it

what about puting a spin canister on the crankcase bypass hose... also - maybe pulling the vacum or electrical line to the outside vent gate on the AC. This way the outside vent gate is always closed.... or you could put a switch on the vent or if you ever wanted to open it???
** edited added note **
I hope the flapper part # posted on page 6/7 will work for a new 04 truck... I see no reason not if that is a new body style flapper... I have two on order....

well - I put on a 8 foot+ hose on the crankcase bypass system.... must say that most of the toxic "free" air up front is now gone!! It is now just at the end of the rear drivers side cab.. I did not use the complete 10 ft tubing because I really could not get the angle to be completely a "down hill slope" the last foot and 1/2 is not sloping down.. I figured that was enough... did no want a 3 foot+ sectoin not sloping... anyway - it works and when I did turn on the vented air yes there is a slight odor but nothing like before....
TO be honest at some point if it is not that hard I would like to put on a spin canister on the crankcase system like they where in 98 - 2002 ... I think this most of the problem with the AC system... now if we could just fix the cowl area we would be "back" in business...
any comments....

Well, I received my first reply from DC today. It was a canned answer basically statying to take it to a second dealer for a diagnoses. If it's "broken", they'll fix it under warranty. They basically stated that if it is a "design flaw", the warranty would not cover it. Here is their reply:
Dear David:
Thank you for your email to DaimlerChrysler regarding your Dodge Ram
2500.
I am happy to report that your vehicle meets all of the safety standards of the National Highway Traffic and Safety Association (NHTSA). If you
would like to learn more please visit: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov
Unfortunately, we are unable to diagnose the situation you have outlined in your email. There are too many variables involved and a detailed
inspection of your vehicle will be required for proper diagnosis.
DaimlerChrysler dealerships have the factory training, equipment and
information available to them to diagnose and correct problems with
DaimlerChrysler Motors Corporation vehicles, if necessary. Should your
dealer require factory assistance, it is available through our regional
Business Center.
The dealer must determine if the situation written about is a function
of your vehicle's design or a defect in materials, workmanship,
manufacturing or factory preparation. The latter examples are the only
types of defects covered under the new vehicle limited warranties.
If no defect is found, there is nothing that can be done to "fix" the
situation described.
If you disagree with the dealer's findings, or the dealer has been
unable to determine or resolve your concerns, you may want to seek a
second opinion from another authorized DaimlerChrysler dealership.
If your concerns are still not resolved after consulting another dealer, please contact our office at 1-800-992-1997, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.,
Monday through Friday, to speak with one of our trained Agents.
Thank you again for your email.

I have the smell in the cab as well. However I am wondering about extending the breather that far back on the truck in northern Alberta due to freezing up. I wonder if a little bit of DC heat tracing tape on a really long breather extension, like some of you have been putting on might be smart idea? Seems to me it could save your seals.
A SPIN CANISTER on the crankcase bypass system if possible... THey had them on from 1998 - 2002. I am going to ask my dealer diesel tech. if I can do this.... I put a hose on it and it made a hell of a diff. up front... I just would like to take ALL gases out the tail pipe....
I still do get the SMELL from time to time if wind is right and I have windows open - which I always do... and stoped at lights sometimes... but still a lot better... I just don't like the gases coming out by my BACK DOOR....

Cold Diese.....Ending the breather at the transmission cross brace like I did should be safe even for Northern Alberta but I would use clear tubing so that you can watch it and diconect it if possible. Whe it gets really cold I'm guessing your crankase would have less moisture to expel it usually gets really dry below 10ºF I wouldn't run the breather to the back axcel however.
ckennedy I am glad to hear your breather BOMB went OK...... like I stated that took care of most of the smell..... I did the air cowl fix first and it helped only a tad.......Keep me posted if you get those rubber flaps from Dodge if so I will order a set to and get rid of my home made one........Don't forget you will need new push pins to re-attach the cowling cover.......BTW they are way cheaper at NAPA and you get twice as many as you need in a bag.

I am going over to the dealer to check on the cab plugs (the taped ones on frame - will see if they should have put them on the frame in the factory ) and will check on the cowling plugs.... I think they will prob. not be in until maybe tuesady... seeing how they where orderd right before the weekend...
