How bad is this?
Hello everyone, I am kind of new to the diesel scene. The problem I have is I only live about
2 miles from work. I pull out of the driveway go down a 25mph road for about a mile then onto a 35 mph road for about a mile. So by the time I get to work my truck is not warmed up at all. I was thinking I could plug it in but would that really do anything? Once I get to work I jump in my bucket truck and drive it the rest of the day. I am running that power service diesel kleen in every tank. Should I buy a beeter car or truck just to drive to work? Thanks

Well do what I do, on your way home go find a highway/freeway/tollway. Then either find a powerjoke that wants to race or see how fast it will go from 50 to 90 about 10 times and then go home.
heck, i live about 25km away from work, and in dead of winter cold, my truck's temp gauge was not coming off the cold side peg on the drive home from work... [going to work it would get off as the block heater was in for 3-4 hours]
it makes for a cold drive home when you have no heat blowing out the vents until you pull on your street seconds from being home
webasto or espar i see in my future

Pretty much the same here. I found a longer route to work so I now go 3.5 miles instead of 2.25. Through one traffic light and four 4-way stops. Stop and go. That's not a big help. I also go home for lunch. On weekends, I sometimes make short trips in town and never get out on a highway.
This is considered "Frequent short trips where the engine does not achieve full operating temperature..." according to the owner's manual maintenance section. It's covered under Schedule "B" maintenance.
Every week or so, I also try to take the truck out on a lightly travelled highway and blow it out. I use Stanadyne at every fill up.
Making the note on this truck, I'm not about to go out and buy another vehicle any time soon.

As long as you warm it up once an a while it is o.k.
The thing is to change oil more often as it doesn't get hot enough to burn off the water vapor and water vapor in the crankcase causes acid build up.

With a cold engine I wouldn't go over 2,000 rpm on a regular basis. Cold engine WOT blasts on a gas engine is hard enough, a diesel engine has alot higher compression and more wear if not warmed up before hard use. Never heard of a farmer starting his tractor and going full load without some warmup first.
