H2 Center cap idea...

Well, I've always like the look of exposed lugs, and since the centers have to be opened up anyway, I had the crazy thought of trying to find a push through style cap for the 08 H2's.

How much of the bevel is needed on the back of a wheel for the tire balancing machines to work properly? The smallest cap I can find is 4.9", the one pictured is 5.15" (I had it laying around from another set of wheels and just set it there for the photo op) By opening up the center to accomodate the 4.9 most of the bevel will be machined off, would a good machine shop be able to reliably open up the center and put a new bevel on without causing balancing issues?

Just a shot in the dark and probably won't work it doesn't hurt to ask. If not then I'll just chuck up the router and trim off the lip and mod the stock caps

Really the only thing youd have to worry about is the inner deminsions on the cap being big enough to clear the hubs, which by the time you make the hub hole large enough to clear the new cap material thickness, you might need to open the hole up another 1/8"~, not sure how much is safe to cut out of the hub center...

Yeah that's the other thing I was thinkin about, but a typical modded H2 wheel has a center of around 4.75" so the 4.9" center cap should fit over the hubs. The outer most part of the back bevel measures 5". So having to machine a new bevel would be a must, but it appears as though there would still be enough meat between the center and the lug holes to still be structurally sound. What would essentially be a newly machined center would have to be done perfectly or the tires will never balance out properly, which is another concern to think about, would a machine shop be able to do this? Again the cap pictured is a 5.15" the cap I would like to use is 4.9"

Think it would look sweet if I can pull it off.

Here is the back of the wheel, the bevel is 5" to the outer edge, so new bevel will need to be machined.

The cap (5.15") pictured is from a Centerline wheel with the same bolt pattern 8 x 6.5 and the amount of material between the cnter bore and the lug holes was much thinner than what would be left from remachining these H2's

So what do the experts think? Yeah or nay

It seems reasonable to me, with a little machine work. Find the smallest diameter caps that will fit over the rear hub and machine the wheels as you've described. I looked at it too but decided it was too much machine work.

If you plan to install the dynatrac kit you could just go with no caps on the front for approximately the same look.

Show us what you come up with.

Does anyone know of that link where someone grafted the H2 caps onto the base of the stock Ram mounting ring, and then smoothed out the 'Hummer' on the cap........and topped it off by paint the cap black......

I am awaiting the same exact set of rims right now that I bought on e-bay. Looks like a good idea but then you will have to shell out more $$$ for a whole bunch of new lugnuts. I'm gonna stick with the Dodge caps. I'd like to see the end result of your idea though.

I just paid twice that for my rims that were just pulled off a new 08 H2. You can get the silver satinny look rims pretty cheap but the chrome or polished rims cost quite a bit more.....
This idea here is looking better and better to me too. It really looks good but how much is it going to cost to get 32 high quality acorn style lugnuts?

I think it was two H2 caps grafted together, the inter one cut out to fit over the rear hub. The outer filled in with body putty, smoothed and painted... but I don't have the link. I saw that someone just cut a clearance hole in the H2 cap to fit over the rear hub. The hub was at about the level of the outside edge of the cap. Perhaps glueing or grafting a plain plastic circle to a cut out H2 cap would work, and look OK. Make four so the set is matching and the Hummer logo hidden all way around.

We need a babymoon style center cap
