What is it? I hear about letting it cyle before driveing. I think that is why my lights dim and I hear the heater fan go up and down. Please explain.

The grid heater is located in the intake and heats the intake air before going into the cylinders for easier/better combustion. When the outside temperature is colder, the grid heater stays on longer. The indicator for the grid heater is located down and to the left of the BRAKE light that comes on when you first turn on you key. It will stay on longer when the temp. is colder, this is the grid heater heating the intake air. After the grid heater indicator (sometimes referred to as a "Wait to Start" light) goes out and you start your truck, the grid heater still cycles as needed to heat the intake air, this will dim your lights as the heater puts quite a load on your electrical system, I forget how much, maybe someone else can chime in on that. The grid heater will continue to cycle even as you drive for a little bit.

I believe the grids are pulling somewhere in the neighborhood of 90+amps. They are located drivers side of engine right under the intake horn (the horn that the oil dipstick is attached to).

It is a toaster for the intake!

 

The grid heaters will cycle for 3 minutes after startup according to the owners manual.
Read the Startup info on the visor, it will enlighten you
