G56 question
G56 question
Got a question about the G56 6 speed tranny. I know the overdrive is not as tall as the old NV5600 tranny, but what about the rest of the gear ratios?
Is 1st gear and reverse proportionally as low too?
I know on my 2nd gen NV5600 w/3:54 rear, trying to back up is WAY too tall a ratio and I usually have to go into low range to back my trailer in alongside the house. I installed a 2 wheel low kit to get this accomplished, but nothing like this is available with the non-disconnect front axles on the 3rd gens.
Just wondering how the G56 guys make out backing up heavy trailers...

1st gear on the G56 is way low. Max rpms (3000) and it is only doing about 8 mph. 2nd is also quite low, about 15-18 mph. Then things get better.
The one thing I don't like about the G56 is that reverse is much too tall. I find I can't let the clutch out all the way and keep things under control. I end up letting up the clutch until it starts to bite and accelerate, and then I have to put it back down and coast for a few feet. Then repeat as necessary.

Thanks for the info, whitebuffalo.
Looks like the G56 1st gear ratio is real good for getting a heavy tow moving from a stoplight on a steep hill.
Reverse looks to be marginally better at slow backing than the NV5600.
Guess will just have to use 4xLow to back in from the street
That oughta bind things up real good!

no prob.
i know, i hear ya on the backing thing......last night i put it 4 low as soon as i hit the dirt putting away the flatbed. gotta thread it through some brush and stuff to get it in its spot......its just a hair too fast otherwise. and 4 lo on the pavement feels like driving a dozer across it
on my 99 i had the 4-low conversion and used the hell out of that thing....
