Fuse for trailer brake controler

Does anyone know which fuse on the truck controls the section where the brake controler plugs in under the dash? I think mine is missing or blow 'cause it does not have any power comming out of that plug in and it should.

Thanks,

Igor.

Remove the fuse cover which is under the hood on the left front side. Inside the fuse cover you will see the fuse information needed to troubleshoot the fuse block. It will be either a 20 amp or 30 amp (depending on the year) fuse. The power fuse gets blown easily so you should carry spares.

I did look, I could not find a single blown or missing small fuse. That's why I can't figure out which it is. Is it a "normal" small fuse, or one of those bigger "block" fuses?

My 2004 manual says it is fuse #1 and it is 30A.

Are you using a voltmeter to check for voltage at the plug under the dash or are you using a brake controller?

I am using the voltmeter, I thought it was #1 but was not sure, will buy a new fuse and check.

Thanks.

I hope you don't have the same issue I am having. I lost my left turn and stop light on my 7 pin. The relay that controls them is integrated in the pdc. I had to order a new pdc at $285.00 to repair it. The fuse only protects the truck the other side of the pdc. Horrible design for a truck meant for towing and a trailer package to boot.

I'm not sure what you mean here, what is a pdc? I'm not sure how a person can tell if a fuse is blown when its one of those "block" fuses.

PDC = Power Distribution Center. This is the main board under the fuse block that all the wiring plugs into. In their infinite wisdom they have built the relays for some of the lights and functions into this mainboard or motherboard. So when one of the relays goes bad you have replace the entire piece. The dealers around me in North Texas want $380.00 and up for this part. I bought off a website called OEMDODGEPARTS.COM. This may or may not be your problem. I had no bad fuses or relays on the top side of fuse block. I took the truck to the dealer and they confirmed this was my issue. I will be putting some inline fuses to protect this piece in the future. You would think as much as these trucks cost they would have done this already.

Thanks, did it effect anything else on the truck besides the brake controler/light wiring?

Thanks.

To check that fuse, pull it out and use the ohmmeter function on your voltmeter to see if there is continuity between the 2 pins. Also, once that fuse is pulled you could use your voltmeter to see if one of the pins has +12v. Then you could check the other pin for continuity to the brake controller harness under the dash and you could also check for continuity of that same pin to ground (which you shouldn't have!).

The PDC is actually the combination of the fuse block (which they call the Integrated Power Module in the manual) and the Front Control Module. The Front Control Module is the computer that controls most of the lighting. The FCM is under the fuse block.

I doubt Igor is having trouble with the FCM because the power for the electric brakes doesn't go through the FCM. It goes from fuse #1 directly to that pigtail under the dash.

That is the only problem I have had with the pdc. All my lights on the truck work and everything else with the trailer. There is a website called hemitruckclub.com that you can download the service manual for 03 and up dodge ram trucks. The manual is for all dodge trucks and the cummins dodges too. You can see what I am talking about in the wiring chapter of the manual. You have to have adobe to open it. The manual is like 80mb so you better have high speed internet to download it. With dsl it still took me about 15 minutes. It is a great tool to have though.
