Fuel Tank Vent

I saw some where that a Dodge truck owner had solved the slow fuel fill up problem and was making a kit so that others could do the same. Does anyone have the link to where he is selling the kits. I am getting tired of dribbling fuel into the fill neck just so I can get accurate fuel mileage calculations.

Search on TDR for 'solved fuel vent problem' and you will find it. I'm sure if you search on this forum you'll find links to it as well... give it a try...

The guy's name is David Kelley. He is over on the TDR website.

Here is a link to the thread there that tells all about the kit.

http://www.turbodieselregister.com/f...d.php?t=102655

The link within the above thread that goes to David's classified on TDR no longer works. I sent him an email & asked him to jump on on this thread.

I put one on my '04. VERY happy with it. On one leg of a trip from Big Pine Key to Sturgis, I went 832 miles on ONE fillup. Put 37.02 gallons into my 34 gallon tank. Fill up is very easy and quick now, even with the big tube pumps.

Thanks, I hope he comes up on here and gives us his address so I can order a kit. I am not a member of TDR, so I can't email him there.

Vent kit

Hey guys. Sorry about the ad not being there. Apparently, the ad expired without any notification to me. I've re-posted the ad and it will be one business day before it's back up. You can e-mail me at dmkelley@fuse.net and I'll give you any information you need about the kit.

There was some discussion of possible problems associated with the fuel expanding as it warmed up and causing leaks when this mod was done. Has anyone reported this actually happening? I like the idea of adding more fuel but I can't help but think the air pocket in the tank was designed to be there. If the fuel does expand and has no where to go what will happen? Will it dribble out the cap?

I have experienced some slight dribbling. No, it doesn't come out the cap, rather out some vent on the tank. If you fill your tank, immediately get in & drive 5 or 6 miles, enough fuel is used so there is no dribbling when you park. Also, if you stop after the first click off, no dribble. On a hot summer day, when I had to walk inside to pay and when I filled until fuel was standing in the neck, I've had dribbles. The convenience of quick, easy fills and effective larger useable tank capacity is well worth the slight dribbling IMHO.

Moterhed,

Next time it dribbles, could you try and find where exactly it is coming from. I haven't heard of this happening before, and I don't have the problem with my truck. I'm wondering if there is maybe a hose clamp loose, or if one of the fittings is leaking.

Shoot me an e-mail if you can locate the leak.

The fuel expansion issue was discussed at length in the original thread. It's getting really long though, so what we determined was that it will expand about a third of a gallon if I remember correctly. That was with a tank full of 50 degree fuel heated to 100 degrees. The bulkhead fitting that comes with the tank is longer than you need, so if you want to leave the extra length on the fitting, the fuel will fill to the bottom of the fitting leaving about a 1" space at the top of the tank when the pump clicks off. I have been filling my tank to the neck for over a year and a half now and have never had a leak or any fuel expansion problems. I drive about five miles home from the pump sometimes when I fill up, and that burns enough fuel to allow for expansion. Some have said that the sides of the tank would bow out to compensate also. This is possible since the tank is pretty flexible.

You can see some pics of the install by looking at the original thread in the link above then clicking on my reader's rigs pics below my name. It's "Spooled-up" on the TDR. You can also look in my sig for more info on the kit.

If anyone is straddling the fence about doing this mod, go ahead and do it ! Dave is a stand-up guy and he came up with a fix for a problem that should never have existed on the 3rd GEN trucks in the first place. Dave even came to Lexington, KY. and performed the install for me. Great guy ! Thanks again, Dave !

DMKelley,

I took a peak at your pictures on TDR (reader's rigs). The kit looks great but I have a question. There is a stock connection for another hose at the highest point of the tank near the location that you recommend for your new vent hose. Do you know what that might be for?

If it is a vent it should do the same thing that you kit does except it may be routed different. Maybe it is a vent with a really small air hole for venting. This would allow you to completely fill the tank but would only allow slowly filling the tank.

This actually makes sense. If there was no venting at all in the high part of the tank, no amount of waiting or slowly filling would allow you to fill that part of the tank with fuel. A small vent would allow you to fill that area if you were patient enough.

I believe there was some discussion about the connection being used in the manufacturing process of the tank....it does not vent or allow airflow to the best of my knowledge.
