Question Fuel Tank Skid Plate Protection

Last week my Ferrier told me to look in his bed. There it was, new fuel tank sliced open.

My 2004 has the transfer case skid plate but not the fuel tank protective plate.
I believe the 05s' optioned do. I wish I could get a retro fit but I don't believe you can. Anybody know for sure?

The parts department at my dealer just told me you can now get a gas tank skid plate for the 2500/3500 for $117. I will get one before the end of the year.

Peterbuilt, thanks for the heads-up. I looked into having a custom skid plate fabbed right after I got my 04.5 and they wanted $230 for it--and that was before the price of steel went way up! The plastic tanks make me nervous. I drive over lots of tree limbs on our logging roads and I know that they can do a lot of damage if you catch one just right. I'm going to look into this.

Being a jeep owner, i must ask, anything aftermarket thats a bit tougher? ( My factory jeep skid took everything i threw at it which was way more than my truck will ever see but id rather pay more for an aftermarket than 117 for a factory skid. yeah i got a weird sense of logic! )

Have any of you guys checked out the skid plate package that comes on the 2005 PowerWagon? It looks pretty nice. I wonder if this is the same fuel tank plate that comes on all the 05's or not.

Thanks for the part #. I ordered mine just now will be here in the afternoon, Wednseday, and I'll take pictures as the diesel mechanic installs it and post em afterwards in my gallery. Don't trust that plastic fuel tank either. Parts guy says the shield fits 03, 04, and 05. Thats what he says today, will see tomorrow at the dealership when they install it.

In addition to the skid plate ($117) you also need a front crossbar ($45) and 10 screws ($9.95). Since you have to drill some holes in the frame for crossbar I had the dealer do it. Also need to drill hole for rear skid plate brace. They charged me an hour labor, said it took them 1 and 1/2 hours and was somewhat difficult to do. But, looks good and worth the cost to me. Now have the transfer and tank skid plates. Now just need the front one and rock rails from the power wagon
