Fuel Question
Fuel Question
Will it hurt to run Off Road Diesel in my truck. I have a ranch up in the hills a long way from any town that I sometimes spend weeks at a time at. The neighboring ranch has Off Road tanks that he uses to run all of the ranch equipment and his own vehicles. The neighbor told me that I could "Borrow" fuel if in need. Is there any diffence in quality of this "Red Diesel" and would there be any adverse effect on my truck if I ran a tankful through it from time to time? I know that it is cheaper cause there is no road tax added, but is there any difference?

Oh, and happy new year to all.

CTDCAL.
Re:Fuel Question
Thanks for the reply.

Are you saying that I can't legally run a few tankfuls of this stuff on my own ranch to avoid having to bring fuel with me or go into town? Is the legal problem with putting the fuel in a licensed vehicle, even if you did not run the vehicle on a public roadway while that fuel was in it?

I was thinking of getting a Aux tank in the bed to fill some of my equipment(small tractor and generator), what problems does it pose to fill the Aux tank with off road fuel?

Re:Fuel Question
Its very tempting to run off road in your truck that runs on public roads...for farm use its ok to use off road or heating fuel and save 30-40 cents a gallon road tax....but unless you have alot of farm equip to fuel just put a tank at your place for that equip most fuel companys will deliever fuel to you...its hard to believe that you will stay on your farm for months and never go onto public roads....ps=dot doesnt check private trucks for red fuel unless they see you fueling at a off road pump and all stations will not let you fuel your truck
Re:Fuel Question
Pappyman,

Thanks again, It would not be uncommon to run around the ranch for a week or two in four wheel drive and burn a tank or two of fuel, I am sure that there would be a little bit of off road fuel left in the tank when I went home, so I guess it could be a problem if I were ever checked, however I have never seen anyone in a pickup being checked and assume that big rigs get checked at the scales. I was more concerned with any adverse impacts on the motor by switching back and forth between off road fuel and on road fuel. Does the off road fuel have all of the additives and bad stuff in it that on road fuel may have? Is it better, worse or the same? I think you touched on this saying that it was no different, so are you saying that it is just the same diesel with a dye added to tell it has not been road taxed or are there other differences?

I am fairly new to diesel pickups (had quite a few diesel tractors and other equipment) so I am a little paranoid about messing something up. All the equipment I have used was older technology non-turbo, non cumputer controlled stuff, so it was not to particular about fuel quality as long as there was not H2O in it and the air filter was clean.

Thanks again,

CTDCAL
