MY fuel filter appears to be leaking from the top area somewhere. I think the O-ring is not seating properly or maybe I'm not tightening it down enough or too much? What is the exact torque specs for the fuel filter? Can I buy only an o-ring somewhere?

 

I just use a cresent wrench, dont know the torc number, did you use a little diesel or grease on the o-ring when you changed it and filter. I have never seen the o-rings sold seperate.

 

Do you mean put grease on the o-ring itself? I didn't do that. I wish I knew the torque specs.

 

You may have pinched and torn the o-ring in the process of installing it, which will not create a good seal no matter what you do. The o-rings are not available separately. I recommend you use a 11/8" six point socket to remove and replace the filter cover in order to keep the cover edges from damage. The torque spec is 24 ft.lbs.

 

always put some vaseline (or similar) lube on any o-ring when installing. keeps it from pinching. the plastic cap is known for leaking anyways. look for a billet cap.

 

Where can I get a billet cap? Also, what local parts store sell the fuel filter and o-ring? I have only got mine at Genos.

24 foot pounds is what is recommended. I always tighten it to specs and never had an issue, although it is hard to get a wrench there with all the darn wires. I would love a billet cap.

 

I bought a new plastic cap at Napa for $15 with O-ring also. It came with a piece of paper that says:

"Permatex high temp. thread sealant or equivalent must be applied to the threads before installing this part"

That doesn't seem right? It doesn't get that hot in the fuel filter does it? I thought I could just put a little vaseline and be dome with it?

 

No, that doesn't seem right. I think I'd stick with the way Cummins decided to seal it up, and just make sure I lubricated the o-ring each time before installation.

I would leave it. I just use a little diesel to lube the O ring, I hope I am doing that right. I have never used Vaseline or any other lubricant and have had zero issues.

 

Not long ago I had mine leak. I thought that the increased pressure from the FASS, 16 psi, was causing the leak. I ordered a billit cap from Geno's to replace the plastic one. While it was on the way I replaced the filter and O-ring and it stopped the leak. I will put on the new cap the next time I change the filter. I use diesel fuel to lub the O-ring and a 1 1/8 socket on the cap.

 

For what it's worth, stamped on the filter lid on my 06 it says

Torque to 25 ft lbs
Do not overtighten

 

Baldwin includes a new o-ring w/ the new filter....most do. Lube the o-ring w/ synthetic or dino grease (doesn't need to be high-temp), then place on the lid. I don't use diesel fuel as a lubricant because the o-ring tends to drag instead of slip. Then tightened to specs. The adapter socket from Ginos makes it easy. I think we've beat this problem into submisson.
