Question Fuel Fill Tube Design - WHY?

Has anyone else noticed that its a pain when you goto a truck stop or a station that has a full size big rig type fuel nozzle because the nozzle doesn't fit all the way in? I noticed this the other day that the fuel neck tapers just past the vent tube. Then to add to the fun, the lip on the nozzle can get caught on the vent and you have to wiggle, jiggle and mess with the nozzle to get it out. Not the worst thing in the world... but why the heck did the engineers taper the fuel tube???

Mine's ok too.

Mikes got an automatic HO; they weren't offered until the later half of the model year.

Technically they designed it that way "because"

I've gotten mine caught once... just long enough to worry it wouldn't jiggle out.
Life's minor annoyances.

Thanks for your post Davelinde, I was starting to think I had the only truck in the world with a tapered fuel fill tube!

Happened to me too. Once you know why it happens, you can prevent it. Worth the hassle to get to the big pumps and fuel faster. It's downright scary to see my wallet empty so fast. There's a Ferd factor there too
