Cruddy MPG

Now I know that I only have 2,700 miles but im getting ont 12.3 mpg! 90% city and I try to drive like grandma. I hear of guys getting 16. This sucks and its killing my wallet. I noticed my trans leaks just a bit and Im going to take the truck in to be serviced. Is there some re-flashes they can do? If so how do I go about doing them?

Question

I drive almost exclusively in the city (stop and go lights, stop signs, max speed limit 40mph, etc.) during the winter. I get between 13.5 and 17.0 on my tanks. A big thing that I notice is that getting the engine up to temperature is critical.

Where is your trany leaking?

the trans is leaking right at the front where it connects to the motor. It only leaks on a steady incline. flat ground, its fine.

Gentleman...These are very sad stories... Something is just not right.
I get 20+ highway empty, 16-17 in town and I got 14.3 mpg towing 14,700 lb trailer on the flat ground going through Texas and Oklahoma. These are real, hand calculated numbers. I have had mine 4 months (8/31/06) and I have 23,000 miles on it. It does not sit still often. My mileage did get better as I got some miles on it, but 9 MPG? I am telling you there is something wrong. Maybe one of the smart guys on this board can assist you with re-flash info etc.
Good luck

I don't see quite as good as mpg numbers as Mr (happy) Bee but they are not too far off.
Mixed driving in the Wash DC metro area gets me 15mpg (75/25 city/urban)
All highway trips with cruise set at 70 = 17.5mpg, 80 = 15.5mpg
Towing my trailer (~10k) at 65 = 11.5, 75 = 9.5 (mild east coast hills)
Winter fuel drops all mileage readings by 1-1.5mpg
These are all hand calculated numbers and the overhead consistently reads 0.5mpg higher than the calc numbers.

I'm pleased with mine also. With the trailer (5500# 7x14 box trailer) I get around 14 - mostly highway. Without the trailer, 50/50 highway/city, I get about 19.

I don't know what to say to you about your low mpg, but have it checked out.

Is it just a film of oil or a drip? Most of us get the film of oil. It is oil coming out of the crankcase vent tube that drops right in front of the tranny on thedrivers side of the motor. That would be normal. Hopefully that is all it is.

When I do mostly city driving, I get around 13mpg. City driving varies alot. Stop lights, traffic etc. Some people post high city mileage when their drive to work is "Leave driveway, turn left onto freeway, drive 10 miles at 55mph, turn right into work". That will get you 17 mpg in the city.

If you stop at a traffic light every quarter mile, you are typically going to get 12-14mpg no matter what you do.

I've been parking on a steady incline lately as well, and have noticed the leak you are mentioning. Mine is Antifreeze and not Trans Fluid. Are you sure your's is leaking tranny fluid and not antifreeze?

Not a big leak... probably about 10 to 20 drops over night

Mines going into the dealer to see what's up this week... I'll let you all know what they find.

Any discussion about fuel mileage has to take into consideration driving stye and speed. A driver who accelerates "briskly" away from stops will get MUCH worse fuel mileage than one who accelerates at a moderate pace. Especially when you consider what a diesel Ram weighs. For highway cruising, keeping your engine rpm below 2,000 is important. Our trucks have the aerodynamics of a barn door, so they push a lot of air.

You can't take off like a drag racer and run 80+ on the eway and expect to get 20 mpg!

My truck is just a little 305/550 in a shortbed 2500 2wd, but, I just got back from a trip from Nashville to Michigan to visit my kids for Christmas. Nice cool weather, but not too cold, no wind, running empty at a consistent 68 to 70, I got 23.1 mpg. That's hand calculated. Not too shabby!

The return trip was on ULSD biodiesel. Pulled into a Meijer's in Ann Arbor & bio & regular were the same price, so tried a tank full. Put 31 gallons in my 34 gallon tank. Same mileage going back home. No noticable difference in performance either.

motorhead, what was the ratio of the bio? Or was it 100% bio?

One thing that really helped my mileage was replacing the factory air filter with a NAPA Gold 2846 filter. Almost immediately, my mileage went up and I saw a definite performance improvement. I could tell the turbo spooled up much quicker and the truck had more power.

My $0.02
