Me to Mr. Coffe. . . .I have an 06 and tow both a boat and a 26ft toy hauler and the toy hauler has lots of lights. . .Are you suggesting the 06 trailer light wire has some current limit issues or? Please explain. . . . .
Yes, the 06's and 07's have a TIPM (totally intagrated process? manager?) at any rate the TIPM replaced the standard fuse box that was on the earlier models. The TIPM is like a computer controlled breaker box....if any circuit, say the running lights, exceeds something like 12 or 15 amps it will turn that circuit off and display an error or CEL....then you must have the circuit reset by the dealer or some other programmer for the lights to come on again. The dealers have recently started upping the amperage to around 17.5 to help with this problem....kinda dangerous IMO...are furses really that complicated and expencive or is this just another ploy to get you to vist the dealer more often???
Hey Redeyedracer. . . many thanks for the answer. . .the goodnews is my trailers must be drawing less than 12/15amps because after 2 years I would have popped by now. Swapping out for a bunch of LEDs would get pricey.
You got a heck of a payout. You could pickup a newer truck with less then half the km for that money easy. If your looking to spend just what you got payed out, probably looking at a 04-06 with around 110-130km? Theres really nothing to stay away from. Just a FYI, since your in medicine hat I would check out Michener Allen Auctioneers in Calgary, trucks are a LOT cheaper then any private sale or dealer.
3500eh.
Don't believe ALL you hear about the 2006 trucks and the tpim problems.
I asked my dealership about the tpim and lighting issues. They told me that most people who had problems ALSO had trailer wiring problems, especially shorts to ground, fried their tpim's.
My dealeralso hooked my truck up to their computer and made sure it was set for the max volts/amps to the trailer harness/plug. Seems that some trucks were also set too low from the factory, or those that had 'dealer' installed tow packages and the dealer did not have them set up for max volts/amps. I guess there was some kind of service memo out about making sure the trucks were set up for the right volts/amps.
I have towed several trailers with my 2006, my 32' GN with LQ is lit up like a Christmas tree - NO problems. I also have taken the time to build a fuse box on each of my trailers, each circuit is fused separately. I will blow a fuse before damaging the tpim. If running light loads are a lot, I'd consider using a relay anyway.
I can tell you that my 2006 has had virtually NO real issues other than the normal stuff that most seem to run into. Threw a couple rail pressure codes early on, those problems have been solved. Blend door in the HVAC died, like everyone elses, fixed under warranty. The truck is a workhorse, powerhouse, just great to drive, I have NO complaints and would buy another one tomorrow.
